About this ebook

Dreamscapes is a series of 12 short stories capturing Astra Crompton's real dreaming experiences. Each short story aims to recapture the visual presentation of the dream through different narration styles and points of view. There is no running theme between them, aside from a varying component of fantasy. All will be collected in a print volume due out December 2012.

One Dreamscapes story will be epublished on the 7th of each month of 2012. April's offering is a chaotic clash of previously existing characters from 9 different stories entitled "The Pit-Battle".

In "The Pit-Battle" the original characters from nine disaparate stories are thrown together into the same point in time and space. Chaos ensues as these myriad peoples and creatures try to come to terms with the jarring disorientation that has ripped them from their lives.

An author's note has been included to offer some insight into the original tales these characters hail from. If further information about these worlds or stories is desired, they can be found on www.astracrompton.com and tarorae.deviantart.com

    Author’s Note:

The following instalment of Dreamscapes will be overwhelming to anyone unfamiliar with my creations. It needs to be stated here – before you are thrust into the wholly boggling experience of the Pit-Battle - that all of these individuals, their worlds and stories were already known to me. While spanning years in the dates of their initial creation, and including game ideas, graphic novel plots and novels in planning, each of these individuals had been ripped from their respective stories at a seemingly random point and were thrust – very much outside canon plot – into this dream.

While the addition of visual aid is not available in this ebook format, I will include extra illustrations in the print copy that will hopefully help anchor them in the reader’s mind’s eye as they appeared for me.

For this edition, I hope that the following brief explanations will suffice, and hope that anyone who wishes for further elucidation will please reference my website (www.astracrompton.com) or my DeviantART gallery (tarorae.deviantart.com).

Think of it this way: say you were dreaming of Clint Eastwood in one of his films, a story you knew well, and suddenly, add in Barack Obama during a press tour, Leonardo da Vinci inventing his first flying machine, Luke Skywalker facing off against his father for the first time, Wall-E scrambling after Eve so as not to lose her, Frodo struggling through Mordor with only Sam and Gollum by his side, Harry Potter watching on helplessly as the Death Eaters come for Dumbledor, the Three Musketeers standing up to fight Rocheforte, and Jesus speaking to his Apostles at the Last Supper. You know these people; you know their worlds, their stories. They all hail from different times, settings, places – yet they, in and of themselves, are familiar. Now imagine that all of them, for no reason, collide. This is what the Pit-Battle was to me.

Please feel free to reference the following descriptions to familiarize yourself with those individuals who tear through these pages.

The Stories: (in order of appearance)

Twin Gear – A science fiction story that was intended for possible card games, comic ideas or illustrated short stories. It is set in the far future when humans are struggling for survival in space. They cannot afford to waste resources and precious lives in warfare and so have instead enabled a neural alternative to fight over their disputes. For this purpose, 60 genetically modified humans, called Gears, were crafted. (Associated characters: Ikarus)

3ninERASE – A Magical Girl fantasy intended to be an epic comic story in the Japanese Manga tradition. Set initially in modern day, it follows a trio of girls meant to assist Father Time due to calamitous events happening in the future. Together they are able to access the Time Stream: a cosmic consciousness that orders all events so that the beings existing in the different zones of Past, Present and Future won’t tamper or slip between the ages. Along with the Three Fates, they address irregularities and villainous misconduct in Time. (Associated characters: Casparitis, Rake, Sovan (the Three Fates), Saifa, Tani, Khora (the three Time Keys), Lohai (Casparitis’ familiar))

Velvet Diaries – A supernatural alternate history, focusing on Vampires, Gargoyles, Lycans and the Occult. Taking place in a romantic history, (roughly the 1600s), these Vampires need to feed on live blood to sustain their youth, beauty and potentially everlasting life. But despite this illusion, their flesh is very much dead, and their arch-enemies, Gargoyles – thrive on dead flesh. (Associated characters: Vincent de Luna, Malachi Rednight)

Ul-Zaorith – An epic fantasy world that has spawned a tabletop RPG, countless illustrations and several novels. It is the setting for two of the tales included in the Pit-Battle:

The Resurrection of the White Tiger is the second-to-last instalment of the Circle Series novels and tells of the restoration of the Tirivahni Throne and the freeing of their people from The Occupation. (Associated characters: Prince Falian, Ñgaius, Asarid, Wilem, and all of the other Founderlines)

Battle of Heroes, the second part of the Prophet’s Tale Trilogy regarding events from ancient history that shaped the modern world through a legendary conflict between Western and Eastern Continents. (Associated characters: Ahd’ar’ohk, Sasharr, Korindrihn, Obalose)

Chromatic Zone – Originally intended to be a comic, it has since dissolved into an illustrated novel project. A retelling of the Christian Mythos in a modern setting that re-aligns Heaven, Hell, Earth and Eden as equal planes that were separated by a terrible cataclysm, ousting the Pillars of Eden from their rightful home. (Associated characters: Xanthos)

Zodiac~Books~12 – A fantasy/romance tale set in modern day on a supernatural version of Earth, specifically in a city called Westshore. Meant for a graphic noel epic, this story follows the lives of the Zodiac Children, those born with the power to manifest and pilot giant mechanized suits known as the Celestial Destroyers. They fight for humanity’s survival and to protect civilization from their rivals, The Philosophers, who aim to restore nature instead. (Associated characters: Arius Amonte; Rapid Fire, his machine)

Primal Crusades – A fantasy/supernatural tale set in modern day in a supernatural version of Earth – specifically the same Westshore in which Zodiac~Books~12 takes place. Despite
