About this ebook

No mother should have to bury her child. But it happens... This is the story of my son and his short life. I've written this story for those who understand, and those I hope never have to understand. I've also written this to exercise the demons that have been left behind. This is not something for the weak to read. It is full of truth (as I see them today) horror, and pain and suffering (his and mine). This was Jared! May he rest in peace. Jared C. Pemberton: March 10, 1985 - November 15, 2004
This is a true story as seen through the eyes of Jared's mother

    Part 1: The End

    November 15, 2004

My phone started ringing.  Strange I thought, it was Monday morning, and I didn't really get calls before I left for work.  A quick scan of the caller ID and I spotted my ex-husbands phone number.  Even stranger, since he and I had very little communication with him.

I was standing in my new kitchen.  I had just moved in this weekend with my three daughters and my current husband.  It was a really nice kitchen for me, new counter tops, dishwasher, stainless steel double sink and a huge side by side refrigerator and freezer.  It had brand new porcelain tile on a fresh coat of paint.  I liked this house.  I decided I was going to love living here.  It was going to put me just thirty minutes outside of New York City (where I worked in advertising) and the schooling was GREAT!!

I pushed the green button on my cell phone and said Hello in my somewhat annoyed tone.  I really didn't like talking to the ex much.  But since my oldest child and my only son Jared chose to stay in our old town at his father’s house, I guessed I would have to speak with him a little more often....

The ex Roger said Karen, I found Jared in the basement hanging by a rope. I'm not sure how I asked or even why I did since I already knew the truth. Somehow I just knew but still my voice worked on its own accord and asked

    Is he dead?

The without really wanting to listen I heard Rogers pained voice answer

    I think so.

I'm not really sure what Roger said after those first few words.  My stomach started to feel like I needed to vomit.  I could hear this very high pitch screaming so painfully in my ear.  The sound was louder than anything I had ever heard before in my life.  The agony in each horrific screech tore chunks and pieces of my heart out.  My legs became like jelly and unable to hold my weight. I found myself dropping like wet noodle to the floor.
