    Preface

This small book and its mighty story is laid out in three parts. The main chronological thrust - playing out over a week’s time - makes up the first section. Scattered throughout this section are asterisks (*) and a corresponding number. These endnotes refer to the second section of the book: Notes from a Father, nuggets of insight and conviction from Craig’s personal point of view.

It is recommended you flip to the corresponding note whenever you find the (*) symbol, especially if you are a believer in the cross of Christ. If you are not, and have picked up this book out of vague curiosity, then perhaps sticking to the main chronology is the best thing for you. Simply tapping each endnote within our e-book format will jump you to the appropriate section. Tapping return at the end of each note will bring you back to your page.

In breaking up the book this way we have tried to separate the concrete scientific facts of the case as best we can from the spiritual convictions guiding our purpose. Of course, to completely eradicate references to the Spiritual within the main line of the story would be impossible. But the goal is to provide a dual reading experience that offers a series of events plainly seen and inarguable, with a going deeper search for spiritual truths and insight.

The first two sections of our story end at the beginning of the third, the story of Kennedy’s time while away from his family. You will be directed to move to this portion of the story by a double asterisk (**). Be on the lookout for it.

We hope you 1) enjoy reading about a medical miracle and 2) most importantly, are either encouraged in your faith or moved to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Kennedy’s story is a song of praise for Him.

    Let us begin.

    Prologue

    Mark Kennedy

Mark was the oldest son of Patsy and Gerald Kennedy. Amy Kennedy was the fourth of five children. She loved her brother, Mark, very much. Growing up, she wanted to marry him. Thankfully for Craig Buettner there are laws against such things in Louisiana, believe it or not.

Mark was a devoted father, a hard-worker, and an avid hunter. He was a hero to the Buettner children; they grew up calling him The Buckmaster. It seemed every Christmas visit to Grand Cane (a suburb of Shreveport) Uncle Mark would arrive one late morning with a buck strapped to the back of his truck and a fresh story about another trophy. In the fall of 1999, at age 35, Mark Kennedy died.

18 months earlier, while getting a field ready to hunt with his two boys, Mark suffered a seizure. His sons, Patrick and Nathan, were able to find aid and get him to a hospital in Shreveport. By the time he arrived at the medical center, Mark was back to normal. Only at his boys’ insistence did the emergency physician go ahead and do a CAT Scan of his head. The result: a tumor, in his brain.

That tumor in his left frontal lobe started a roller-coaster of medical events for Mark. He had his first surgery soon after the diagnosis was given. At first, it seemed prayers had been answered. A highly trained neurosurgeon in charge of Mark’s care came out of that first operation very excited. During the procedure, they discovered the tumor might actually only be an abscess, an infection that could be treated with antibiotics.

Obviously, the entire family was ecstatic. Mark’s older sister, Pam, was the first to enter the room where Mark lay post-op. As she comforted her sleeping brother - his eyes closed and head wrapped in bandages like a turban - he began to mumble out to her,

    Dossy ... Dossy ...

Pam lurched back from the bed, horrified at hearing Mark call to her as if she was their dead grandmother.

Not able to hold it back any longer, the mumbling patient broke down laughing. That was Mark Kennedy, before the cancer and after the cancer. He was the light of any room he walked in, a joy to be around.

As surgery reports and test results came back failing to match up with the requests sent to God, Mark kept that same positive outlook, never changing, always upbeat. And his faith in the God who apparently wasn’t answering all those prayers? That
