Approximate Length: 8,230 words

Part 2 of a series

Laura stubbed out the remains of the cigarette, smiling at her last thought. She wondered for a moment just what she was really capable of. The paradigm had changed, and without realizing it, she had been thrust into an odd position. As she approached a new phase in her life, fresh from the trauma of loosing most of what she held dear, Laura began to understand that she would have to change. Moving forward, her new life would require a different version of herself, an iteration more interested in taking care of her own needs.

She had set those changes in motion the moment that she decided to give it all up and walk away. Laura idly wondered if later in life she would see that act as a traumatic moment, or an empowering one. Though there was no way to know, she was keenly aware of what it meant for her in the short term. Very few of the rules she had lived by applied anymore. It was strangely freeing to realize, if frightening at the same time. Her future was now solely in her hands, and no one else's.

Laura smiled as she contemplated another cigarette.

    Conversations

Laura bit her lip unconsciously as she stared down at the glowing phone in her hand with anticipation. It was a maddening feeling. It had been a very long time since Laura had nervously awaited a reply from someone, and she was privately thrilled to feel the intoxicating feeling once more.

Only a few short moments had passed since she sent a text to Dan, the young man who had so captivated her attention earlier. It was a terse, short message. Laura had struggled with what to say before finally giving in to her first instinct. Telling Dan that it was nice to meet him might be fairly routine, but at least it was an honest statement.

Pacing around the kitchen of her second floor apartment, Laura wondered if there was something she could do to take her mind off of the situation. As time passed, her anxiety grew. Why hadn't he responded? He was probably still driving, but what if he wasn't? What if she had imagined the whole thing, or if he didn't feel anything for her after all? The thought made her feel sick, something else she hadn't experienced in a long time. She shook her head as if to physically clear it. None of these lines of thought were going to help her or get her anywhere. Laura had to do something to get her mind off of the young man, but what could she do?

After methodically making a pot of coffee that she was sure she would need, Laura headed into the bathroom to dry her hair off. A quick glance out the window was all she needed to confirm that it was indeed still raining outside. The torrent appeared to be even stronger now then when she had come in from her
