Joining the Navy
When Mario Santini was young, 18 and in the Navy, the surrounding sailors made fun of him because he didn’t drink, not even beer or wine. His big deal was a coke and a stimulating evening at Norfolk’s leading roller-skating rink.
What the Navy men didn’t know, while they drank themselves to oblivion, in some cheap main street gin mill, was that SKINNY GUINEA
(making reference to his Italian heritage and 150 pound frame) as they called him, was dating the most gorgeous Norfolk high school girls.
Mario Santini, although only a teenager himself, became street-smart self-reliant.
It was time to free himself from Old World Italian values governed by repressive ethnic Catholicism.
He quit high school in his sophomore year and joined the Navy much to the objections of family members who thought he would amount to nothing without a high school diploma.
However, Mario surprised them all and finished high school through Navy correspondence courses, came home on leave, and graduated with his old class.
He insisted on wearing his formal Navy dress uniform rather than the traditional cap and gown when he received his diploma.
Taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, Mario went on to receive a Masters Degree in business (MBA) from a major university. He later put together his own lucrative stock market brokerage firm.
In addition to Mario’s intelligence, he was also quite good looking.
Mario was five-feet-ten-inches tall, weighed about 150 pounds and had that movie-star, Latin-lover look.
He would have attracted the attention of central casting in any major movie studio.
These dashing qualities made him popular with the prep-schoolgirls, much to the chagrin of their parents.
The general thought that Norfolk parents had towards sailors in those days was that all sailors were irresponsible cads bent on de-flowering their daughters
