    Chapter one

    The water is cold in the Atlantic, off the coast of Delaware. It is a little past nine, and I still have several miles to go before I reach the beach in Lewes.

    Tomorrow, they will start a search, when I am reported missing by my wife. They will find my center console adrift, with a smear of blood on the aft rail.

    Tests will prove the blood is mine…of course it is…I put it there.

    I was fishing alone, offshore, when I probably had a heart attack, and fell over the side, after hitting my head.

    For anyone who cares, tomorrow I will be considered a dead man. What the hell…seventy years is long enough and maybe some good will come from my final project.

    For now, get to the beach, get the van, and get on the road.

    Chapter two

    The call came to the Ocean City Coast Guard station at around eight-thirty that night. Petty Officer Nick Rice took the call. The woman sounded pretty frantic. My husband has never stayed out past dark…something must be wrong, she said.

    Rice took the information on her husband, and the boat. He is seventy and is alone. He is in an eighteen-foot Maycraft center console, with a ninety horsepower Yamaha engine. Yes, he does have a cell phone, also a marine two-way radio.

    There was no record of a distress call today and his cell phone was going to voice mail. He had left home around two p. m. and was always home before dark.

    It was possible he had experienced a medical problem. She said he had a history of heart disease, with
