If you're concerned with how well you'll do in an upcoming Tough Mudder (or other obstacle course race), this book will provide you will all of the tools and knowledge you need to succeed.

Obstacle course racing has become a huge part of my life. I've spent over a year honing my training and preparation to compete in two World's Toughest Mudder events. The World's Toughest Mudder is a 24 hour obstacle course race, their end of year "Super Bowl" event.

In this book, I cover everything you need to know about Tough Mudder:
Obstacle descriptions, tips, and tricks
Gear recommendations from head to toe
Registration and logistics
Training programs

I also cover my journey up to and including my participation in the 2012 and 2013 World's Toughest Mudder events.

In my research, I surveyed a large group of Tough Mudder competitors to crowd-source tips, tricks, and pitfalls, and I provide the results of that survey here as well.

    Introduction

Obstacle racing has become a great passion of mine. There are a growing number of races happening all over the world, and people are getting very excited for them. I, like many others, got bored with plain old running, which is why adventuring racing is so much fun! It brings you back to your childhood days of playing on jungle gyms, getting muddy, and having fun with your friends.

My excitement for adventure racing lead me to compete in the World’s Toughest Mudder twice (so far). The World’s Toughest Mudder is a twenty four hour obstacle course, their end of season Super Bowl event. The person who completes the most laps of a Tough Mudder course in a day wins. Training for it became my life for around fifteen months. I studied all aspects of it in an attempt to give myself a real shot at winning. I wanted to be the World’s Toughest Mudder.

With how many people I talk to in person and see online asking about tips, tricks, strategies, and pitfalls, I thought writing this book would be useful to pass off the knowledge I obtained. I start with my own personal journey, and then discuss the obstacles, logistics, gear, sample training programs, and many other things. I put out a survey to people who have done Tough Mudders before and was able to find some really interesting results, which I will present to you here.

While most of what I talk about is Tough Mudder, everything will still apply to many of the other adventure races out there (Spartan, Warrior, Dirty Girl, etc). I hope it helps! It has certainly helped me simply by doing this research.

    Embracing Mud – My Story

Twenty four hours! I overheard the large man with the burly beard next to me tell his friend. The guy who won it ran over fifty miles! The other people around us at the starting line of the Super Spartan continued asking him questions about a race that sounded insane. Little did I know, that’s when the seed was planted for my own maniacal foray into ultra-distance adventure racing.

At the time I thought it was crazy to ever consider running around a muddy course, climbing up and over, down and under, swinging, jumping, diving, and pushing one’s entire body to the limits for an entire twenty four hours. I had gotten into adventure racing thanks to an ad on the side of my Facebook feed. It was for a Warrior Dash, a short three mile obstacle course. It looked awesome! I had grown bored with running on its own, and this was exactly what I was looking for.

A friend later saw pictures of me doing that Warrior Dash and invited me to join her group for a Super Spartan. I ran that course, which was about six miles, and I was hooked. I knew that you needed to qualify for the World’s Toughest Mudder, and it left me wondering if I had it in me. I signed up for a Tough Mudder a few months later to put that to the test.

There’s an interesting rivalry in the obstacle racing world. Each different franchise is constantly trying to one-up the others, making theirs harder, crazier, and more fear inducing. The athletes that do each tend to grow an affinity to one, and often jump on the bandwagon. They believe that the one they do is the hardest, and in turn they believe that they themselves are the toughest. At the time, I think most people would have agreed that the Tough Mudder series was the industry leader for overall difficulty.

    Running Roots (or lack thereof)

My running background was pretty insignificant. I grew up playing recreational league soccer and a single year on my high school team. I was a midfielder position because of my ability to run nearly non-stop the whole game. I didn’t have a particularly powerful kick, nor was it all that accurate, so this suited me well. My job was to run up and down the field, helping break up the opponent’s offensive strikes and then turn the ball around and begin one of our own. During running practices, I would often be seen at the head of the pack, my fuel tank apparently larger than most. I didn’t do all that much running on my own time either, so perhaps there’s a bit of natural talent somewhere deep down.

At the high school level, my running proficiency wasn’t enough to keep me in the game. I spent a lot of time on the bench and found it terribly unfulfilling putting in all that practice and travel time for nothing. Instead, I picked up a part-time job and
