Ruth McEnery Stuart (1852–1917) was an early twentieth century American author as well as one of the original spoken word artists. She was published frequently in numerous popular publications including Harpers Magazine and New Princeton Review and became most remembered during her writing career (which spanned from 1888 to her death in 1917) for her oral performances of the numerous articles, short stories, and verses she composed.

    A Widow's Tale

    On the charming scrap of land in the foothills where I was raised, in the location that has been a thriving garden for the last thirty-five years, is the ghost of a hotel. Once host to miners and prospectors who were making their way into the hills of California in search of the illusive golden nugget, this hotel hummed with patrons. That was, of course, until a fire raged through the hillside and burnt it to the ground. When first hoeing away the earth that gave way to beds of carrots and Mr. McGregor style cabbages, we would often find square nails and signed pieces of support beam—miraculously preserved in the red clay for some one hundred years.

    I have always had a picture in my mind of what this hotel looked like, though any record of it was lost before my family ever came to know about it. I had an immediate picture of the same hotel in my mind when I started reading The Haunted Photograph. I found this story refreshing in more ways than one. It isn't setting out to be a terrifying tale—in fact it was originally published as part of a collection called Humourous Ghost Stories. The early 20th century author, Ruth McEnery Stuart, was also one of the original spoken word artists.
