    Cincinnati, Ohio. Spring.

I inch forward on tiptoes until I realize the balls of my feet are hovering above the pavement and lower myself to the ground. The man ahead is guarding the entry like a bloated, purple-sheathed ogre. My eyes dart left then right in search of an escape route should the plan go awry, but it’s no use. I’m too close to the danger zone. There’s only one way in now. I steal a glance over my shoulder to make sure I’m not alone in this dangerous quest. Ethel is behind me, nudging me forward.

Relax, and act naturally, she whispers. We’ll be inside in less than a minute.

Just don’t make eye contact, I tell myself as if my true identity is tattooed on my pupils. I’m convinced he’ll know the truth. Bouncers always know the truth, and the fat old man perched on a stool underneath the glowing neon rainbow sign of this gay bar looks like he could bounce my scrawny ass right out of here.

I turn to Ethel for a last minute gesture of encouragement – or a last ditch effort to get the hell out of here, but a weak you got this is all she offers up.

I don’t know why I let her talk me into coming to a gay bar. Maybe I shouldn’t have come out to her. Maybe I shouldn’t have said I’ve never seen a drag queen perform or kissed a guy or done anything homosexual outside of looking at porn on my laptop while jacking off in my bedroom. But unfortunately that’s as gay as I’ve gotten in my sixteen years on this planet. If it were up to me, we’d bolt for the car, head for Ethel’s house, sneak a few beers, and call it a successful night. But, with Ethel, things are rarely up to me. She hasn’t shut up about
