About this ebook

Four different Earths in four different dimensions were left as nothing but lifeless balls of rock and sand after their moons were destroyed. Massive hunks of debris slammed into the planets, ripping away their atmospheres, and extinguishing every last bit of life. With a near infinite number of dimensions, was it beyond the realm of possibility that these four ghost worlds were nothing more than a coincidence, or was it perhaps a coordinated attack, the goal of which was to destroy whoever, or whatever inhabited those worlds?

Suspicions and theories abound, but they'll never find the answers they're looking for unless they put boots on the ground. In order for them to do that however, they're going to need some new gear, including space suits, metal detectors and ground penetrating radar. If, as they suspect, these dead worlds truly were inhabited by the race they called the creators, then they not only need to find evidence of their presence on those worlds, but they also need to find out just who it was that attacked them, and more importantly, the reason why.

Also, in an effort to repair a relationship that had grown somewhat distant over the years, Jarrod, Derek, Tina, and Sarah invite Patricia to come down to the cabin with them for a little vacation, so they can get things back to the way they were in the early days. While there, they head out to explore an as of yet unexplored dimension. In the process, they find a world that's beautiful beyond anything they could have possibly imagined, but they also find a large supply of an incredibly rare mineral that could just be the key to producing limitless energy.

Ghost Worlds is the 8th book in the Unseen Things series.

Cindy's Story, which is a humorous private investigator novel, and a superhero story called The Accidental Hero, which is both humorous, and quite dark at times.Aside from his writing, Duane is also a musician. He took his first bass guitar lesson in 1987 and has been playing bass ever since. He also plays some guitar, and a little keyboard and some percussion as well, with a particular focus on hand drums. As he's always been a great lover of music, he often has it playing quietly in the background while he writes.Born and raised in Northern California, he would later move to Idaho, where he lives the quiet life of a relative hermit with his wife Sharon, and their two dogs.

Ghost Worlds - Duane L. Martin

    Chapter 1

Man it was awesome seeing you all over the holidays.  I just wish you could have stayed longer.  I don't know where the hell the time goes, Jarrod said to Beth over the video chat.

Oh god, tell me about it!  Seems like that's about all we talked about on the way home.  Anyway, it's you guys' turn to come here next.  I really want to take you guys over to introduce you to Thayelle, so you can get to know her and her people.

Yeah, I'd like that.  It'll be nice to be around some people in that dimension who aren't trying to kill us for a change, Jarrod said with a wry grin.

Sorry if I seemed a little clingy before we left.  I really thought this whole separation thing would get easier after a while, but obviously it hasn't, Beth said with a heavy sigh.

No, it hasn't.  Derek and I had a long talk about you guys and his parents the night after you left.  Let's just say that we weren't takin' it all that well.  We don't cry a lot, but...you know.  I'm just glad the girls still have their families here.

Yeah, at least that's one positive in this whole thing, Beth said.  I was kinda thinking that maybe at some point down the road we might end up recruiting more people and stuff, and then we'd be able to come back home again.  I mean, that's thinking ahead in the long term, but we'll see how things go.

Either that, or we could just recruit a new team for over here so we could join you guys over there, Jarrod suggested.

Yeah, either way.  I mean, this whole experience has been good for us...especially for me, but this distance thing just sucks.

Man, I'll say it's been good for you.  I think everyone just about crapped themselves when you came struttin' on in here looking the way you did.  I mean, it's one thing to see it on a video chat, but seeing it in person it was something else entirely.

Awww, you're really sweet Jarrod, she said with a bright smile.  You know, it's been good for the kids too.  I'm sure you noticed how much more confidence they all have now.  Everything they've been through with the fangtails, and then that operation in the Faranox dimension on top of it really went a long way to making some positive changes in the way they see themselves.

We all noticed it actually.  It felt like they were talking to us as equals for a change, instead of like a bunch of kids who were standing in the presence of their heroes.  I mean, it was always pretty flattering that they felt that way about us, but I'm really glad to see that change in 'em.  I guess they were right when they said they just needed to get out from under our shadow for a while, so they could have some accomplishments of their own.  Martin and Dylan seemed pretty happy too.  It was so great to see 'em that way after all they've been through.

Yeah, it sure is.  Dylan's pretty ridiculous sometimes, Beth said with an amused look.  He's running around all the time trying to do little romantic things for Erin, and she's just eating it up like a schoolgirl in heat.  As for Martin and Heather, I still can't believe how fast things happened with them, but it sure turned out to be the real deal.  I'm so glad we have both her and Erin with us.  It's nice having more girls around here to pal around with.  After we got back, Sheryl and I we're pretty depressed, so Erin and Heather arranged for us all to have a girl's night out at that club Heather used to work at.  We all got hit on repeatedly, and damned if Jenny and Laurie were loving every second of it.

Just Jenny and Laurie? Jarrod asked, smiling at her knowingly.

"Well, I guess if I'm being honest, then I'd have to say that we all enjoyed it.  I mean, who wouldn't, right?"

I sure as hell would, Jarrod said.

Man, you should have seen it.  Sheryl had this one guy buying her drinks all night, and she was full on flirting with him.  I guess all those years of being a housewife kinda made her forget that she was actually a desirable woman.  We didn't see her or John for most of the next day, so I guess he got the end benefit of it, Beth said with a grin.

Oh, I wanted to ask you.  Have your spacesuits arrived yet?  Jan arranged for 'em a long time ago, but since they have to be custom made, they've been taking a while to get here.

No, not yet.  We haven't heard anything about 'em either.  I guess they'll just get here when they get here.  There's no hurry on exploring those dead worlds though, is there? Beth asked.

No, not really.  It's not like they're goin' anywhere, but still, I'd really like to know what happened.  There's somethin' about that whole thing that's just been bothering the hell out of me.  I mean, it's way beyond coincidence that we'd find three different worlds with their moons destroyed like that.

Yeah, that is rather troubling, Beth said.  We've been pretty curious about what we'll find on 'em when we go there.  Hopefully we'll be able find at least a little something, even if it's just an old skeleton or whatever.  It'd kinda suck to go through all the hassle of exploring around out there, only to wind up coming home with nothing to show for it.

"Yeah, that would be extremely disappointing, but not entirely unexpected, Jarrod said.  I'm still not sure it isn't all just some sort of a bizarre coincidence.  I mean, back when the planets were forming and stuff, things were pretty chaotic.  Who's to say that the moons weren't hit by something that broke 'em up and took out the Earth before it had a chance to develop?  I guess in all the infinite dimensions out there, the likelihood of running into dimensions where that's happened is probably higher than we'd expect.  That said, these worlds are too damn similar for my liking.  I really think something happened there that wasn't natural."

Yeah, I agree.  The fact that they all seemed to have happened in the exact same way is highly suspicious.  I mean, we all saw the pictures the blue fins took from inside the portal.  They're practically identical on all three of those dimensions.

Four, Derek said as he walked up behind Jarrod.

    Four? Jarrod asked.

Yeah.  I just got off the phone with Stache.  He and Gramps popped over to the cabin to let us know that when they were checking out another new dimension yesterday, they found another dead world, and it was exactly the same as the others.  They brought a laptop with 'em and tethered it to the phone so they could send the report and the photos over.  I just took a look at 'em, and sure enough, it's exactly the same, Derek said.

All right, now that's just way too much of a coincidence to be just a coincidence.  I think our original theory was right, and someone did that on purpose, Beth said.

Yeah, it's starting to look that way, Derek agreed.

All right, send me over the report as soon as you can, and we'll take a look at it too.  Are you guys gonna get some spacesuits for the blue fins as well, so they can explore their area around those worlds too? Beth asked.  Jarrod and Derek both looked dumb struck for a moment.

Well...shit.  I never even thought about that, Derek said a few moments later.

Me either.  I guess we should probably get Jan to look into that, Jarrod said.  "Unfortunately, Freddie and Diana are still over with Charles and Richard at their house, so we don't have anyone here to get the measurements from.  I guess we'll have to head out to the island so we can get some measurements from the folks out there.  Probably just need a few of 'em, since they're all pretty much the same size.  Well, aside from Edward that is.  Dunno how he ended up a little bigger than everyone else, but he'll need his suit to be custom made.  The others should all be fine in generic male and female suits.  Before we do anything though, we need to ask 'em if it's something they even want to do.  I mean, walking around in a spacesuit on a planet with no atmosphere is risky at best, so whether they go or not is something they're gonna have to decide for themselves."

All right, let me know what they say after you talk to 'em.  How have they been doing otherwise?  Have they discovered anything else interesting that we haven't gotten the reports about yet? Beth asked.

I'm not sure what reports you've seen since Patty's usually the one that sends 'em over to you guys.  Did you get the report about the cat world yet? Jarrod asked.  That one just came in yesterday.

No, not yet.  What's the cat world?  Is it full of single, middle-aged women who've just given up? Beth asked with a silly grin.

"So you have seen the report then," Derek said as he smiled back at her.

Seriously though, what is it? she asked.

Apparently it's a whole world full of evolved cat people, Jarrod said.  Like, where we evolved from apes, they evolved from large cats.  Gramps was on the team that went there, and from what he says, they're every bit as advanced as us, if not more so.  Unfortunately, that makes it more dangerous for 'em to actually get out of the portal to do a bit of exploring, so they had to stay out of phase the whole time.  They tried to look for someone they might be able to communicate with, but you can imagine what a difficult prospect that is.  It'd take a lot of observation to actually find someone they'd feel comfortable enough exposing themselves to, and even then there's no guarantee they'd be able to do that with any degree of safety.

Yeah, I never really thought of that, Beth said.  We've run into so many races that were behind us technologically, that exposing ourselves to 'em wasn't really all that big of a deal.  I think the only ones we've come across so far who were at a similar or more advanced level than we are were the demon people that Jan and Larry found, and the ach'len.  Now we got another one to add to the list.  Oh, by the way.  Next time you talk to Freddie, ask him if the ach'len ever went back to visit their home dimension.  I was just thinking about that the other day, but no one ever mentions 'em much, so I was just wondering if they ever headed over to check things out or not.

All right, but I'm not sure if the ach'len are even around all that much.  We've talked to Freddie now and then, and he hasn't mentioned 'em at all.  They might just be kinda keeping to themselves, simply because they're not comfortable with being around outsiders.  Wouldn't surprise me at all if that was the case, especially knowing how they are, Jarrod said.

Yeah well, I wish they'd get over it already, 'cause I'd still like to meet 'em someday.  They give Erin the creeps, but Jan says they're nice enough, so who knows?  Maybe they just need to open themselves up a little, like Charles and Richard did.

Yeah, that'd be nice, but don't be surprised if it doesn't happen, Derek said flatly.

Well, we can hope, can't we? Beth said, smiling at them both encouragingly.  Anyway, I guess I should let you guys go for now.  Got any plans for the rest of the day?

Not really.  We've just sorta been playing it by ear, Jarrod said.  We haven't really been doing much lately, since we're so focused on getting out there to explore those ghost worlds, but we can't really do anything on that front until the spacesuits get here, so we've just been doing all the day to day stuff while we wait.

What kind of stuff? she asked.

You know, stuff like workin' out, fartin' around out in the shop, cleaning the house, etcetera.  Billy and Barbara went to hang out with the leprechaun people a couple of days ago.  Turns out they've been making the amulets for so long now, that there isn't anyone around anymore who remembers anything about who ordered 'em to make 'em in the first place.  They were always just told that if they stopped making 'em, it'd be the end of their people.  Stupid part is, they don't even know what the amulets do or why they're making 'em.  Looks like the creators just gave 'em instructions on how to mine and cut the crystals, and how to use 'em to make the amulets, and then they just left 'em to it.

So basically what you're saying is, we don't know any more now than we did before, Beth said.

Nope, but they did set up a trade deal with 'em, so we're trading 'em stuff for the amulets now.  Not that we need 'em, but it was a good way to build up a relationship with 'em.  Mostly we're just giving 'em tools and utensils and stuff to make their lives easier.  We're having Jan get us a box of grenades for 'em too, Jarrod said.

Grenades?  What do they need grenades for? she asked with a curious look.

Remember that big ass snake that Billy saved that one little guy from? Derek said.  Well, we figured they'd really love us if we gave 'em a way to defend themselves when they get attacked by those things, so we're giving 'em some grenades to use.  We figured bullets wouldn't travel all that well there because of the gravity, but the grenades should do ok since all they have to do is toss 'em somewhere in the near vicinity of the snake for it to be effective.  It's hard to say how the gravity would affect the shrapnel and what not, but in any case, it'll work better than what they've been doing.

    What have they been doing?

Getting eaten, Derek said with a wry grin.

Just make sure they know to toss 'em when the snake is actually clear of the village.  Don't think they'll like us too much if they start caving in people's homes with those things, Beth said with an amused look.

No, probably not, Jarrod said with a breathy laugh.

Aside from that, are you sure they can even use 'em properly with those small hands and arms of theirs?  I mean, can they hold the lever after they pull the pin, and then throw it far enough so they're clear of the blast? she asked.  Derek and Jarrod looked at each other for a moment, but didn't say anything.

Well...shit.  Didn't even think of that, Derek said.  I'm sure Billy and Barbara will figure it out fast enough when they try to show 'em how to use 'em.  Maybe they can teach 'em how to set 'em up as booby traps or somethin' instead, Derek suggested.

That'd probably be the better way to go, Jarrod agreed.  Anyway, it's like Derek said.  I'm sure they'll figure out something while they're out there.  If not, then they can just bring 'em back and we'll go with Plan B.

    What's Plan B? Beth asked.

We give 'em a bertha, so they can plaster their whole village with snake innards, Jarrod said with an amused look.

Hey, no fair stealin' my ideas! Derek protested as he gave Jarrod a playful nudge on the back of the shoulder.

You guys are crazy, Beth said with a laugh.  All right, I guess I should get goin'.

Yeah, we probably should too.  Like I said, there's not much goin' on around here, so maybe we'll take the girls out somewhere.

Yeah, you should!  I'm sure they'd love that.

Send everyone our love, and give Danny a big hug for me, Jarrod said.

I will.  Love you guys.  Talk to you soon, Beth said as she blew them a kiss.

Love you too, Jarrod said, returning the gesture.  Bye for now.

See ya Beth, Derek said as Jarrod closed the call.  Never gets any easier, does it?

Sure doesn't.  I don't wanna think about it anymore though, otherwise I'm just gonna end up all depressed, and that's not how I wanna spend the day.

    Me either, Derek agreed.

So, what should we do this afternoon? Jarrod asked.  "There's gotta be something fun we can do with the girls."

Beats me.  Seems like they're always doin' girl stuff together lately, Derek said with a bit of a frown as he racked his brain, trying to think of something they could all do together.

Hey guys, Brian said with a smile as he came walking through on his way to the kitchen.

Hey man, you got a second? Derek asked.

Sure, what's up? he asked as he turned and came walking over to join them.

We're trying to figure out something fun to do with the girls this afternoon, but we can't really think of anything.  You got any suggestions? Derek asked.

Hmmm, that's a tough one.  When was the last time you guys beat anyone up? Brian asked.

Jeez, it's been a while.  The last few times we went to that pub, those idiots weren't goin' there anymore.  We even asked the bartender if he'd seen 'em in there, and he hadn't.  Pretty sure they just gave up on goin' there after that last time when we broke their noses, Derek said.

Maybe you guys could go and find a new place to beat people up then, Brian suggested.

Yeah, maybe.  It's just that we've done that already.  We were kinda trying to come up with something new we could do with 'em, Jarrod said.

Do you have any mutual friends, or people you know that you could go and visit that you haven't seen in a while? Brian asked.

Dunno.  We never really had friends in school other than Jeremy and the gang.  I guess we could go see..., Jarrod said, but then he stopped himself.  No, never mind.

Who? Derek asked, looking at him curiously.

Well, the only other people from school we were kinda friends with were Trish and Frank, but I know you wouldn't wanna go and see them, so just forget I mentioned it, Jarrod said.  Derek stared at him for a moment, but didn't say anything in response.

Who's Trish and Frank?  What's the deal there? Brian asked.

It's a long story.  I'll tell you some other time, Jarrod said.  Brian looked at him curiously for a moment, but Jarrod didn't seem like he wanted to elaborate on it, so he just let it go.

Well, you can always ask one of the others for ideas.  I don't really have any off the top of my head.  I mean, how ridiculous is it that we're rich, immortal, and can travel to a bunch of different dimensions, but we spend half of our time sitting around the house all bored and stuff? Brian said.

Very ridiculous, Jarrod agreed.  Anyway, that's all we wanted.  You can go back to what you were doing.

Ok.  If I think of anything, I'll let you know, Brian said with a smile as he turned and continued on his way.

Let's go, Derek said after he was gone.

    Go where?

Let's go see Trish and Frank.

Really? Jarrod said with a surprised look.

Yeah, really.  I guess I just needed time to deal with everything.  I know they really felt bad about what they did, and they've tried a lot of times to apologize for it, but I just wasn't ready to hear it.  I think it's about time I put that part of my life behind me once and for all, and let them do the same.  People change bro.  I've changed a lot over the past several years, and so have they.  I guess I just needed time to accept that.

You know, I never thought I'd hear you say that.  Are you really sure you wanna see 'em? Jarrod asked.

Yeah, let's do it.  Go ahead and find out where they're living now, and I'll go tell the girls to get ready.

Ok man, Jarrod said as Derek turned to walk away.  He watched him go, thinking to himself how proud he was of Derek for finally coming to such a realization, but he still wasn't convinced that what they were about to do was a good idea.

    *   *   *

Turn left up there, and then it should be the third house on the left down that street, Tina said as she looked over the map that Jarrod had printed.  Why'd you print this map?  I do have a GPS on my phone you know.

Well, I figured if we're still bored after we get done there, we could always take a match to it and use it to light one of your farts.  We'll record it, and then make a side by side video comparison with a video of a bertha explosion, so we can see which one did more damage, Jarrod said with a grin.  Sarah started giggling as Tina reached up to the front to give him a smack on the arm.

Ass hole, Tina grumbled as Sarah leaned over to whisper something in her ear.  A few moments later, Tina fell silent once again and went back to examining the map.

Jarrod felt Sarah reach up to give his shoulder a gentle rub on the other side of the seat, and he had a pretty good idea of what had happened.  Sarah understood that the only reason he'd made his little joke was to keep Derek's spirits up ahead of what they were about to do.  Fortunately, it seemed to have worked, since Derek was now sitting there smiling to himself.  Jarrod almost laughed when he saw the look on his face, because he knew exactly what Derek was thinking.  A bertha ain't got nothin' on that girl.

Derek, are you really sure you wanna do this? Sarah asked, her expression suddenly becoming more serious.  It's not too late to turn around you know.  We can just call Trish and make some excuse that we got busy with work or something.

Listen, don't worry about me.  I'm fine.  Really, I'm ok.  I just feel like we left things unresolved the last time we saw 'em, and I don't like leaving things unresolved.

Ok, as long as you're sure, Tina said as she reached up from the back seat and rubbed his arm gently.

    I'm sure, Derek said.

All right, we're here, Jarrod said as he pulled up and parked in front of the house.

When they got out of the Hummer, Derek confidently strode up to the door, and didn't hesitate for a second before he rang the doorbell.  The others all looked at each other anxiously as they stood behind him, but all the nervousness they were feeling suddenly vanished when Trish opened the door with a baby in her arms.

Hey you guys!  It's great to see you!  Come on in, she said as she backed out of the doorway.  Everyone filed inside, but no one could take their eyes off of her.

Hey!  Man, we sure weren't expecting that, Sarah said.

Neither were we, Trish said with a breathy laugh.  So, come on in and sit down.  How have you all been?

We're good actually.  There's been a few bumps here and there, but everything's been pretty awesome otherwise.  We're all married now, and living in this really nice place about an hour north of here, Derek explained.

Oh, really?  That's awesome!  I had a feeling you guys would stay together, Trish said with a bright smile.

    So, where's Frank? Tina asked.

Ugh!  Don't even get me started.  He was supposed to have yesterday and today off, but he ended up having to work for someone else who was sick, so he's at work right now.

What's he doing nowadays? Jarrod asked.

He's a police officer actually, Trish said.

Frank's a cop?  No shit? Tina asked, not believing her ears.

Yep, for six months now.  He's one of the rookies, so they make him take all the crappy shifts and stuff.  Still, it pays well, and it's something he decided he really wanted to do, so he studied hard for it and made it happen.

What made him decide to become a cop? Sarah asked.

Honestly, it was all that stuff that happened with Diedre.  He realized how close we came to getting implicated in that whole thing, and he decided that that wasn't the side of the law he wanted to be on, so he started taking criminal justice courses, and worked really hard at getting in shape for the physical part of it.  He's hoping that one day he'll get to work with at risk kids, helping 'em to straighten themselves out before they go down the wrong path, like we almost did, Trish said, and as her eyes met Derek's, she suddenly felt the hollowness of guilt in the pit of her stomach.

Listen, I know I never actually said it, but part of the reason we came here today is because I wanted to tell you that I forgive you and Frank for what happened back then, Derek said.

How could you possibly forgive us for that? Trish asked with a tremendous amount of regret in her voice.

Because, people are different in school than they are as adults.  There's all kinds of peer pressure you go though, and you end up going along with things even if you know they're wrong, just because you're trying to fit in.  I don't believe that any of you, not even Diedre, thought that Logan would run home and kill himself after what happened that night.  I also know how hard it had to be for you to get away from her when she really went over the edge.  When you guys showed up in that courtroom and testified about the night that Logan died, that told me everything I needed to know about how much you'd changed, and how much you regretted what happened.  I couldn't really bring myself to forgive you back then, but at least I was finally able to say goodbye to Logan, and put that part of my life behind me.  That's why I can sit here now and tell you that I sincerely and honestly forgive you both for what happened that night.

Trish stared at him for a moment, and then her eyes started tearing up.  She handed Sarah the baby, and then she walked over and threw her arms around Derek.  He wrapped his arms around her as well, and held her in silence for a few moments before she finally spoke.

Oh god Derek...I just can't believe we had anything to do with what happened that night.  It still haunts me even to this day, and I know it haunts Frank too.  That's why we..., she said, but then she stopped and backed away, looking over at Sarah and the baby.

That's why you what? Derek asked.  Trish looked back at him for a moment, and then she took the baby from Sarah and handed him to Derek.  He looked really uncomfortable holding it, but he did his best to make sure he was doing it right.

Derek, I'd like you to meet our son...Logan, she said.  Derek looked up at her, and the others all gasped when she said the name.

Logan? Derek asked, looking at her questioningly.

Derek, we knew there was nothing we could do to bring your brother back, but we figured if we gave our baby his name and raised him to be a good man, it would at least keep your brother's spirit alive, even if just in some small way.  Even though we were a part of Diedre's little cult, once we were finally free of her, we both realized what horrible people we'd been.  I wasn't kidding when I said that it's haunted us ever since.  We've both had nightmares about that night.  That's why Frank wants to work with at risk kids.  He doesn't want 'em to end up making the same mistakes that we did.  He doesn't want any more families to suffer, because no one stepped in to put a stop to things before they got out of hand.

No one knew what to say at that point.  Derek just stood there holding the baby, bouncing him up and down gently as he stared into his eyes.

Logan had green eyes too ya know, he said finally.

    He did?

Yeah, Derek said as he gently handed the baby back to Trish.  And I have no doubt whatsoever that this kid here is gonna grow up to be a good man, just because he's got such good parents.

    Derek, I...

Trish...don't, Derek said, cutting her off.  Leave the past where it belongs.  I know from personal experience that you can't move on with your life if you're always carrying it with you.

Yeah, well...thank you, she said quietly.

So, now that all the heavy stuff is out of the way, why don't we lighten things up a bit? Sarah said with a warm smile.

Yeah.  Let me just put Logan down for his nap, and then we'll all have a nice long chat and get caught up on stuff, Trish said as she headed toward the hallway.  As soon as she was gone, Tina and Sarah both got up and gave Derek a hug.

I know how hard that had to be for you.  I just want you to know that we're both really proud of you, Sarah said, almost in a whisper.

Yeah well, I guess there comes a point where you just have to grow up and learn to accept things for what they are.  Trish and Frank are good people now, and I hope they have a really great life together, Derek said.

God, where are my manners?  Can I get you all some coffee, or some juice or something? Trish asked when she came back out to join them several minutes later.  They all looked at each other questioningly for a moment.

No, I think we're fine.  Thanks though, Tina said.  So, how have things been for you guys otherwise?  Looks like you've settled into a nice life together.

Yeah well, we're in debt up to our eyeballs with the mortgage and what not, and I can't work right now because of the baby, but we're doin' ok on Frank's salary.  The overtime he gets really helps, but it also kinda sucks since I don't get to see him as much as I'd like.

You know, a long time ago, we actually saw you guys together somewhere while we were out, and we were kinda surprised that the two of you had gotten together, Sarah said.

You know, I'd wanted to be with Frank since the seventh grade, but I was too nervous to say anything about it back then.  Once we got into high school and Diedre and I became friends, the first thing she did after she found out that I was interested in him was to go after him herself.  At the time, I guess I was too embarrassed and disappointed to say anything about it.  Rather than seeing her for the person she was right off the bat, I just stepped aside and blamed myself for not saying anything to him sooner.

God, that's really pathetic, Sarah said with an irritated look.  She just went out of her way to screw everyone over.

Yeah well, it all worked out in the end.  After we finally got away from her, things happened pretty quickly between us.  I didn't know it at the time, but he'd been pretty miserable for most of the time they were together.  He was just going through the motions, because it was easier than trying to break up with her.  He figured he'd just ride it out until graduation, and then use the excuse that he was going off to college to finally get away from her.  It wasn't until after we got together that I found out that he'd actually wanted to be with me the whole time, but you know how she was.

Yeah, unfortunately we do, Sarah said dryly.  It's pretty rare to come across someone with as toxic of a personality as she had.

Oh god, tell me about it.  Frank did some digging around to find out the status of her disappearance after he joined the department, but apparently they've run into nothing but dead ends.  No one can figure out how the hell she got out of that hospital, Trish said with a bit of irritation creeping into her voice.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Wherever she is, I'm sure she's long gone now, and won't be coming back, Derek said.  Tina had to pretend to fix her shoelace to hide her grin, while Sarah pretended to look down at what Tina was doing in order to hide her own.

I wish I could be sure of that, Trish said nervously.

Well, look at it logically.  She escaped from the hospital and had every cop in the state looking for her.  The last thing she's ever gonna do is to show up all of a sudden where everyone knows who she is.  Her family had a lot of money, so maybe they shipped her out of the country and got her a new identity or something.  Hell, maybe she even headed up to Canada, Jarrod suggested.  I mean, it's not like it's that far away.  She could have just hitchhiked her way up here for all we know.

I actually wish she would show up again.  There's nothing Frank would love more than to be the one who got to bust her ass and throw her back in jail, Trish said.  As for her parents, I don't think they'd help her.  What she did pretty much destroyed their lives, and they've been keeping a really low profile ever since.

In any case, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  You've got your own lives to focus on now, and she's done more than enough damage to all of us.  Don't just let her go on doing more, even after she's gone, Derek said.

Yeah, you're right.  I just wish there was some way I could know for sure where she is and what happened to her, Trish said with a heavy sigh.

Who knows?  Maybe someday you will.  Until then, just live your lives and be happy.  If she ever did come back, she'd be going after us long before she ever even thought doing anything to the two of you, Tina said.

Let's just hope she never comes back, and that'll be the end of it, Trish said.  Anyway, let's talk about happier stuff now.  What have you guys been up to?  What are you all doing with yourselves now?

Well, like we said, we're living about an hour up north.  I don't know if you remember that lady who came to watch us graduate, but she's really rich, and she owns a house up there that we take care of for her.  We also handle her affairs for her and stuff when she's out of town, Sarah said.

    All of you? Trish asked.

Yep, all four of us.  Mike, Jeremy, Jenny, and Laurie were helping us for a while, but they all ended up heading over to Scotland to take care of things for her at her house over there, Sarah explained.  It wasn't the whole truth, but it was close enough.

Scotland!  Man, that's not something I ever would have expected, Trish said with a surprised look.  As she spoke, Tina pulled out her phone and started scrolling through the photos on it.

Here, look at this.  They came back for a visit over Christmas.  This is what they look like now, Tina said as she handed her the phone.

Oh my god!  You've gotta be kidding me!  What the hell happened to 'em?  I mean, not to be unkind, but they used to be the school nerds that everyone walked all over.  Now it looks like they're the ones doin' the walkin'!

Derek and Jarrod happened to them actually.  They were the ones that got them all into working out, and they taught 'em how to fight too.  Believe me, they're more than capable of taking care of themselves now, and you wouldn't believe the change in their personalities.  They strut around all full of confidence and stuff, and they look you right in the eye when they talk to you.  I mean, they're just completely different people now.  Oh, and they're coupled up now too, Tina said.

    They are? Trish asked.

Yeah well, I had a Halloween party a few years ago, and I sorta had this idea to hook 'em up with each other, and it totally worked.  They've been together ever since, Tina said proudly.

"Well that's awesome!  I'm really happy their lives turned out so great after all the crap they had to endure back in high school.  Do you think I could have their number over there?  I think Frank and I would both really like it if we could apologize to 'em for the things we did back then, and I don't
