THE ONLY REAL WEAPON Satan has to use against us is to lie. He lied to Adam and Eve in the garden, he lied to Jesus in the wilderness, and he lied to Peter when he put the thought in his mind that Jesus should not die on the cross. But, his lies have power in our lives when there are unresolved emotions in our lives, such as fear, anger, guilt, lust, and jealousy. These emotions give power to the lies of Satan. And they provide a landing strip for the enemy to gain entrance to our beliefs. If we believe a lie, it has power.

SITTING ON THE WELL-WORN SOFA, I looked around my house with affectionate eyes as I remembered the moments. There were so many. All the times I had sat in that comfortable place—the numerous prayer meetings we had in that room, the fellowship, the various groups of people, the strategic conversations, and all the little moments —together they made this last moment seem so precious to my aching heart.

We were leaving for Spain. It was very difficult to leave my home and everything I treasured. I spent many hours preparing my house, daily getting rid of unnecessary items. I carefully looked through my teaching papers and various articles—fingering carefully each page. Many were important, but I had to ask myself, Were they all necessary?

I am a writer and a teacher of prayer and seem to collect everything that I might one-day use for training or writing. But I was narrowing down, carefully anticipating our move and the upcoming changes in my life. It hadn’t been an easy place to live. After all, we were missionaries and this was our home country. What were we doing here? But God had chosen this place in Virginia Beach and had done so many significant things in our lives in that place called home.

It had been the birthing place of our ministries, Elijah Company, Inc. and Intercessors Arise International. We had so many prayer meetings of all shapes and sizes in this home. It had been a House of Prayer for the nations. It was the place we had lived the longest and had experienced the deepest walk with the Lord. It was where we had experienced the dark night of the soul when God had led us into the desert for a seemingly endless period of time. It was where I had been diagnosed with breast cancer and where I had recovered by God’s grace. This home was a place of deep inner growth with the Lord where I had written several books on prayer and where we had developed our Destroying Spiritual Strongholds seminar that is the basis of this book.

Perhaps you can imagine how hard it was for me to leave.

I packed my bags with some reluctance, said goodbye, and off we went to a new country, a new place, and an uncertain future. We had gone to Spain numerous times, but this was different. We were going for seventy days and spying out the land for a possible move in the future. When a person steps out into the future by faith and burns their bridges, there is a need to lay aside the unnecessary and a need for breakthroughs all along the way.

Breakthrough prayer is crucial.

And because life is becoming more uncertain, we all must learn how to pray breakthrough prayers in our own unique circumstances. I knew the Lord was going before us as we left for Spain and that made all the difference. He was at the head leading us, and He would break through every obstacle along the way. He would burst through all confinements.

But I needed to learn how to personally break through the obstacles in prayer. I needed to be aware of the dangers, the ups and downs I would face along the journey in unknown territory. I needed to learn how to pray God’s truth and overcome the enemy’s lies if I wanted to walk in victory. This is what Breakthrough Prayer: Praying God’s Truth, Destroying Enemy Lies is about. As I wrote this book, the Lord was showing me the many ways I must practice breakthrough prayer in my own life. In making this transition from one nation to another, I needed to discover the secrets of breakthrough prayer.

Fears, uncertainty, and helplessness were seeking to overwhelm me. The enemy was attacking me with his relentless lies. I needed to learn to stand on God’s truth without being overwhelmed by my difficult circumstances. Perhaps this is why the Lord had me write this book. I needed to experience breakthrough in the nitty-gritty experience of life in transition.

In Breakthrough Prayer I emphasize practicality. I want this book to be practical for you, bringing transformation to your life in the situations you face daily. I want the truth presented to bring freedom into your life. As I moved to Spain, I needed to see God’s breakthrough. This book was not written in theory, but in real life day-to-day circumstances. It was written in a way where I had to say to myself, Does this really work for me? Can I find the secrets to breakthrough prayer?

God has guided me in a way that will not only help you to find breakthrough, but will help you to lead others in breakthrough prayer. If you are ever faced with negative thoughts that seem out of control, experience difficult relationships that seem unmanageable, or carry baggage from the past that is hindering you from being all that God wants you to be, then this book will help you.

WE ARRIVED IN MADRID after an overnight flight across the Atlantic Ocean. The plane was full and we got little sleep. The crisp, cold air welcomed us to Spain, awaking two very tired travelers. I expected spring-like weather, but for two months it was colder than normal.

The house where we lived was situated in southern Spain and was very cold. I felt chilled to the bone most of those first few weeks. In addition to that, the winds were strong for several days, adding to the chill of the temperature.

Perhaps there is a solution to the feeling of being frozen most of the time in the midst of adjusting to a new country. Initially I was feeling somewhat down and discouraged as I anticipated such a long road ahead—when suddenly the Lord gave me an idea!

And in my spirit I somehow knew that if I grabbed onto the truth of this God-idea, my life would radically change.

God began by reminding me that we were in a part of the world where there was a lot of darkness, a place where principalities and powers had ruled for years. The chilling air wasn’t just because of the weather, but the darkness of the spiritual climate was cold as well.

Only the warmth of fervent prayer and praise could possibly change the environment.

The Lord showed me that if I was going to live in a place of darkness, I needed to be constantly thankful, with an attitude of praise and worship in my life all the time. I already knew that praise and thanksgiving were powerful, but now the Lord wanted me to rise higher and to move into a new level of thanksgiving.

• Light dispels darkness.

• Praise breaks the enemy’s grip.

• Worship is the atmosphere where truth dwells.

I began my first experiment with this almost immediately. What could I lose? I needed a breakthrough. I began to thank God for the cold. I thanked God for the changes I was facing. I thanked Him for everything I could think of.

And my cold heart began to warm up. My environment began to thaw. I began to see everything through new eyes, and I forgot about the cold. I saw the beautiful mountains outside my window. I began to see the beautiful city situated along the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea that is simply breathtaking. I was better able to focus on God and His beauty rather than the chilling cold in the atmosphere.

Truth began to reign in my heart. We had no car those first few weeks but we were able to walk and see the beauty on foot, praising and praying as we walked. Everything changed through worship, praise, and thanksgiving.

The atmosphere of praise began to warm me inside and out.

You are living in hostile territory as well. The world is getting darker by the day. The enemy is trying to invade the world with a chilling cold filled with fear and hopelessness. You have a choice to invade your environment with praise and thanksgiving—turning the darkness into light through your praises—or you can live miserably in these last days. You and I have a choice to begin to see God’s eternal focus and personal plan for us, or we can succumb to the gloom and doom mentality of the world system. It’s up to us.

As we begin this book called Breakthrough Prayer, we must realize in the very depth of our being that breakthrough prayer is permeated with worship. Worship is the atmosphere in which truth dwells. In this first chapter let’s begin by learning to develop a lifestyle of worship. Let’s discover the magnificent splendor of God, and find the power of a thankful heart.
