    Eighteen beers on draft, solid bottle selection. Draft choices focus on imports, with rotating selection of local beers. Voted Birmingham’s best bar by readers of the local paper.

    Dugan’s

    A lively fixture in Five Points for more than twenty-five years. Irish-influenced pub, but cross-section of craft and imports available from nine taps.

    Magic City Brewery

    Immaculate, with a beautiful three-sided bar wrapping around the brewery, which is behind glass in the center of the pub. Drinkable beers, some pushing the Alabama alcohol limits.

    Food: Cajun/creole      Smoking: Throughout

    Seventeen taps include a little of everything. Live music (an eclectic mix) on the large outdoor patio. Decorated in New Orleans funk (Elvis bust, Santa hat, Mardi Gras beads on the back bar).

    Mill Brewery, Bakery & Eatery, 1035 20th St. S., 205-939-3001. The pub’s beer is actually made at a microbrewery next door.

    Taco Mac, 1914 11th Ave. S., 205-322-0088. Twenty-five taps and, like Taco Macs in Atlanta, specializing in sports and hot wings.

    DOTHAN

    Located in an old storefront, with a beautiful back bar. Good food, well-made though not particularly adventurous beer.

    Food: Brewpub fare      Smoking: Separate sections

    Located in a former railroad equipment storage warehouse, and one of Montgomery’s most popular restaurants. The lightest beers are best-sellers.

    Regional beers to look for: Alaskan Brewing’s beers, including the classic Smoked Porter. Also, many Northwest craft beers are available in Alaska.

    Essential stops: Humpy’s in Anchorage. They print a new beer menu every night that includes a list of kegs that will go on if one kicks.
