THE HOT AIR OF THE high Arizona desert whipped across Jacob’s face. He could sense a fateful moment coming. He didn’t know he’d never see nightfall, but he knew a defining moment lay ahead. There weren’t no point in thinking about it, though. Only about how to get far, fast. With the sun high, he’d wish he had a hat. Or food, or water. But there weren’t time when it happened. No time to be smart about it. No time to be scared, neither, but that didn’t keep it away. No time for anything but finding the closest horse and hightailing it out.

This weren’t the best horse to ride, neither. Too big. Jacob knew this horse; he belonged to Mr. Keefer from the bank. Mr. Keefer was visiting the ranch house. The horse’s name was Skipper, and he was a fine, grey beauty, but not the best ride. Skipper would tire before some. Need rest. Rest was something Jacob couldn’t afford.

It was his last day. He didn’t know it yet, but his nerves tingled with the feel of it.

It rained the day before, and the land had the smell. Not like fresh wet, but even the day after rain, the smell was different from the dry spells. Jacob was too scared to think about rain and smell, but he had to. Rain meant the creeks might be running, and he had to think of how to find one. Food was another thing entirely. He wished it hadn’t been so long since bacon and eggs that morning, because it was likely to be a lot longer before he had something else.

A secret, she said. Some secret.
