About this ebook
Samantha had a really bad day. It seemed to get worse and worse. Dan was there to pacify and sort everything out. Samantha and Dan had been dating for quite a while. She owned her own company manufacturing tin cans. Dan had given up a high powered position to join his son Brian in his business. They were both fully aware of their financial positions which really didn’t matter. They were head over heels in love with one another. What did matter was how his family would feel about Samantha. It was time to introduce them. Even if it had been such a bad day. The pub was the perfect venue. Samantha was a little younger than Dan. A lot younger really. Surprisingly enough the family gladly accepted her as one of them. As things progressed they drew closer and closer. Sam made a huge impact on the family. Things would change though and life would certainly be different. So different that they would not want to leave home.

Chapter 1
Is she in?
Eric asked.
Who?
Desiree asked.
The boss,
Eric said and Desiree looked at him.
No Eric. I haven’t seen Miss Prentice yet,
Desiree said.
So what are her working hours?
Eric asked and Brian stood alongside Eric and waited. Desiree looked at Eric with huge eyes.
Who’s working hours?
Desiree asked and Eric looked at her.
Miss Prentice,
Eric said and Desiree shook her head.
Eric. Do you have an appointment to see Miss Prentice?
Desiree asked.
No,
Eric said.
If you would like to speak to Miss Prentice, I would suggest that you make an appointment with Dorothy,
Desiree said.
Why should I make an appointment? I would like to chat to her for two minutes,
Eric said.
They were both suddenly quiet as they looked up and Samantha walked in to the reception area. Brian kept quiet as he waited. She walked straight past everyone at a great speed. Morning Mister Snow. Morning Des. Morning Sir,
Samantha said as she sailed past the reception desk. Desiree smiled.
Morning Miss Prentice,
Desiree said and Eric walked behind her.
Can I see you for two minutes?
Eric asked.
Seen me,
Samantha answered.
But can I speak to you?
Eric asked.
Spoken,
Samantha said, and he stopped and looked at her. She walked in to her office and bellowed. Dorothy!
Eric backtracked to the reception desk. They all looked down the passage as Samantha walked straight out of her office.
Dorothy ran down the passage. Miss Prentice?
Dorothy asked and Samantha walked up to reception and stopped and turned. Dorothy walked to her and stood in front of her. Miss Prentice?
she asked again and Samantha looked at her.
Morning Dorothy. A funny thing happened to me on the way to work today,
Samantha said. They all looked at her as she looked at Dorothy. I climbed in to my van and as it happens, I coasted down to the petrol garage. It was on empty. Now don’t we employ someone that looks after my vehicle?
Samantha asked and Dorothy nodded.
Yes Ma’am. Samuel Ma’am,
Dorothy said.
From there I had a blowout. Oh I pulled over and changed it. It took a while, but I managed. Luckily enough my nails are short and I didn’t break a nail. Otherwise,
Samantha said and Dorothy nodded. And then I drove into the underground parking and wanted to park. Small problem,
Samantha said and Dorothy looked at her with huge eyes. Lo-and-behold my parking spot was taken,
Samantha said.
Eric looked at Brian. Uhm. Ma’am,
Brian said.
And then I get to reception. And Mister Snow here would like to see me. Does he have an appointment?
Samantha asked and Dorothy shook her head.
No Ma’am,
Dorothy said and Eric stammered.
The parking. Ma’am,
Eric said and Samantha smiled.
Which is no longer a problem. Because I chained said vehicle to the pillar. Do let me know if someone would like to remove their lovely four by four from my parking bay,
Samantha said and Brian cleared his throat. Samantha looked at him. Mister Snow is this gent with you?
Samantha asked and Eric nodded. Do apologize for wasting his time. He has been standing behind you for the last ten minutes,
Samantha said and looked at Brian. Is he your shadow?
she asked.
No Ma’am. Yes Ma’am. No Ma’am,
Eric stammered and Samantha nodded.
Samantha walked back to the office. I will be out for the rest of the day. Dorothy kindly ask Mister Snow here to take over my meetings for the rest of the day seeing as he doesn’t have much to keep him occupied. I will be out. If the owner of the four by four pops in to the offices about his or her vehicle I will be back on the dot of four. Have a lovely day,
Samantha said and smiled and picked up her briefcase and walked back to the reception area. She walked out of the office and everyone stared at her. It was quiet as they watched her. Samantha pressed the button and waited for the lift. She stepped inside as it arrived. Brian sprinted and climbed in with her. He didn’t say a word as she pressed the button for the basement. He climbed out with her as she climbed out of the lift. She walked over to her van. Brian followed her.
Ma’am,
Brian said.
Yes Sir,
Samantha said.
I parked my vehicle in your parking bay,
he said.
Reason being?
she asked.
I was told to use any vacant parking bay,
he said.
Now who conveyed that information to you?
she asked.
Your Assistant. Dorothy. She told Eric there is enough parking,
he said
And you are seeing who exactly?
she asked.
The Managing Director,
he said and Samantha nodded.
Really? So you had an appointment then?
she asked.
Yes Ma’am,
he said, and she nodded.
Rough stuff when you meet with the Managing Director,
she said.
Yes I believe she is one hard arse bitch,
he said and almost groaned as the words slipped out of his mouth. Samantha nodded and winced.
And someone gave you that little snippet of information I guess?
she asked.
Not anyone in these offices, no,
he said.
So who told you that about her?
she asked.
Brian looked at her. Carter Henderson. A friend of mine. He had earlier dealings with the company,
he said and Samantha nodded.
Ahhhhh Henderson,
she said. You know him?
Sure do,
he said. He did work for the company. She didn’t pay him. And she promptly fired him,
he said.
Did she really?
Samantha asked.
Yes Ma’am,
Brian said and Samantha smiled.
Do me a favor. What did you say your name is?
she asked.
Brian Cutler Ma’am,
he said.
Mister Cutler. Before you go on spreading malicious rumors about something that does not concern you at all please find out the real information. The truth. Phone your friend Henderson and ask who the Managing Director is. Actually. Ask him who the owner of the company is. Once you establish that information I am sure you will be on track. Now. Why were you going to see the Managing Director?
she asked.
About doing a project for the company,
he said and Samantha nodded and smiled.
What kind of work?
she asked.
Work on the software,
he said and Samantha nodded.
And knowing how difficult she is. And her character. With all her flaws. You are still contemplating doing business with the company?
she asked and Brian nodded.
Yes I am,
he said and Samantha nodded and was quiet for a little while.
My other question. If you were going to meet with the Managing Director, surely you are properly informed with her or his name,
she asked and Brian nodded.
I dealt with Eric Snow. I did ask, but he was not forthcoming with the information,
he said and Samantha nodded.
Yes he tends to jump over things. In a manner of speaking,
she said and Brian nodded and smiled. Explain what can be done,
she said and Samantha opened her door and put her briefcase in the van and walked to the front and leaned against the bonnet.
Well. I had a special request to work on the software and to tweak it so that more people can have access to eMail. And everyone will be on the intranet. Which is internal. And the internet as well. The switchboard will be linked up so that messages can be relayed via a messaging system,
he said.
Gosh this sounds so intricate and interesting,
she said and lifted herself on to the bonnet of her van and made herself comfortable as she listened. Now Mister Cutler. Is all of this possible? And who made this request?
she asked.
The Managing Director requested Eric to get the quotes,
he said.
So you haven’t spoken to the Managing Director then?
she asked.
Not personally, no. I was given the information at the office and the appointment was set up for me,
he said.
So do you have all the information?
she asked and Brian nodded.
I worked out the quote. It is pricey because the software has to be changed. Not just tweaked. But it is possible,
he said and Samantha nodded.
What is your company called?
she asked.
Cutler and Associates,
he said.
Wow. So are you an associate?
she asked.
No I actually own the company. But I do employ family who are my associates,
he said and Samantha nodded.
Do you have all the information you need? To go ahead with the job?
she asked.
I do. But before I can get my technicians out I need the quote to be approved. That was the purpose of my meeting this morning,
he said.
So where is it?
she asked.
Where is what?
he asked.
The quote,
she said.
That is confidential Ma’am,
he said and Samantha nodded.
She stared off into space for a while. So. The quote is confidential. Not to be discussed and disclosed,
she said and Brian nodded. But the information about the Managing Director being a hard arse bitch is okay. That bit of information is fine to be shared,
she said and Brian never said a word as he looked at Samantha. She looked at Brian. What is the Managing Director’s name?
she asked and Brian shrugged.
I was told to meet with Eric Snow and he was going to take me through to meet with the Managing Director this morning,
he said and Brian looked at his watch. And now I have messed that up too,
he said.
Now this quote that you will be presenting. What does it mean to Cutler and Associates? Are you going to be making a whopping profit? Will it cover a few salaries for a few months?
she asked.
I don’t work like that Ma’am,
he said and Samantha nodded.
Oh but if you didn’t get the job, you would need to punt for another. Because business is business is it not? After all. And it does end up paying those salaries,
she said and Brian nodded.
I guess. Indirectly. Yes. I do need the business,
he said and Samantha nodded.
She hopped off of the bonnet and smiled. Samantha put out her hand. Nice to meet you Mister Cutler,
she said. He smiled as he shook her hand. She climbed in to her van and drove off.
Chapter 2
Brian stared as she drove away. His vehicle was still chained to the pillar. He looked at her number plate and read. Sam Can One.
He repeated it over and over under his breath. Sam Can One.
He turned and faced his van and held his head in his hands. Oh, no!
He realized she had to be high up in the management team. Definitely one of the top members of the management team. He didn’t have a clue as to who she was, but she had to be very important for everyone to be running around dancing to her attention. He looked at the huge chain which had been wrapped around the pillar and his wheel. He took out his cell phone and dialed his office. Mary. Can you please send Ben over to Sam Can with the biggest pair of side cutters he can find. Tell him to drive in to the underground parking area. He will see me,
Brian said and Mary giggled.
Why?
Mary asked.
Just do it. And put me through to Dad please,
Brian said.
Sure,
Mary said and Brian waited a few seconds.
Brian? Aren’t you supposed to be in a meeting?
Dan asked.
Dad, I am sure I blew it. I repeated what Carter Henderson had to say,
Brian said.
Oh Brian! To whom?
Dan asked.
Yeah. Some woman who works for the company. Miss Prentice? And I think I really offended her. The person that I was talking to. Which means that the information is going to be relayed straight up the ladder. And the person I spoke to drives a van with the registration Sam Can. One,
Brian said.
So who is this person?
Dan asked.
I don’t know who she is. Her name is Miss Prentice,
Brian said. It was all quiet as Brian held the phone.
Son,
Dan said.
Dad,
Brian said.
Miss Prentice. Samantha Prentice. Is Sam Can. She formed the company. She is the sole owner,
Dan said.
Okay. Okay. Okay. What to do. I am at a loss as to what to do. And I parked in her parking bay. And now my van has been chained to the pillar. Do you know her Dad?
Brian asked.
I will have a word with her,
Brian said.
You know her!
Brian shrieked.
Uhm. Brian. Yes I do,
Dan said.
But how?
Brian asked and Dan was quiet for a while.
I will have a word with her,
Dan said and Brian chortled with laughter.
You know her!
Brian said and Dan chuckled. Lord Dad! Are you moving in her circles? She is half your age! She has a fantastic figure! Have you seen how beautiful this woman is!
Brian said.
Dan could not stop laughing. Stop questioning me. Yes I know Samantha. Uhm. Miss Prentice. Rather well,
Dan said.
Dad, you sound far too guilty. It sounds as if you know her really well. Are you dating her?
Brian asked and Dan chuckled.
Brian. What on earth made you jump to that conclusion?
Dan asked.
So I guessed right. And you didn’t deny it,
Brian said.
I would like to date her,
Dan said.
I am sure you would,
Brian said.
Brian. For your information. I haven’t had a real date in over twenty two years. Not since the day Mary was born,
Dan said.
Sorry Dad. But she is lovely. Where do you know her from?
Brian asked.
If I told you that she would probably never talk to me again,
Dan said.
So where then?
Brian asked.
The local,
Dan said.
The local pub!
Brian said and Dan chuckled.
Let me make a call. Ben is on his way over,
Dan said.
Thanks Dad. Can you let me know?
Brian asked.
I will,
Dan said.
Thanks Dad. Ben has arrived,
Brian said.
Dan smiled as he put the phone down. He took the phone and dialed. Hey babe!
Dan said and Samantha giggled.
Dan,
Samantha said.
You aren’t in your office. So where are you off to now?
Dan asked.
Oh I had the worst day ever. Almost ran out of petrol. Had a flat. Your son parked in my parking bay. I didn’t realize it was him though. So I chained his van to the pillar. And he indirectly called me a. A. A,
she said. It was suddenly quiet as she pulled over and sobbed.
Oh baby. Where are you?
Dan asked and Samantha cried and cried.
Kentucky parking area,
she said.
I am coming over,
Dan said.
No,
she said and kept on sobbing.
I am on my way,
he said.
No,
she said.
I am on my way. Stay right there,
he said and cut his call. Dan got up and walked through to Mary. Out for a little while Mary,
Dan said and Mary nodded.
But Dad. Ben and Brian are both out,
Mary said.
They will be back shortly,
Dan said and Mary nodded.
Where are you going Dad?
Mary asked.
To see a client,
Dan said.
But you don’t normally,
Mary said. Dan smiled and ran down the stairs. Diane walked down the passage. There is something strange going on here. Brian has gone to a meeting. Ben had to go over there with side cutters. And Dad is off to see a client,
Mary said and Diane looked at Mary.
But your Dad doesn’t see clients,
Diane said.
That is what is so strange. Where is he off to?
Mary asked and Diane smiled and shook her head.
Any news on that job for Sam Can?
Diane asked.
That is where Brian is at the moment. And Ben. There is something really weird going on. Why did Dad fly out like that?
Mary asked and Diane shrugged her shoulders and smiled.
I hope we get that job. It is a nice biggy. All the factories and the head office,
Diane said and Mary nodded.
That is a big company,
Mary said and Diane nodded.
Five factories spread out over the country. The head office is here. Just think. They manufacture cans. That is all they do. Big business that. Almost everything we eat and drink comes out of a can,
Diane said and Mary nodded.
Dan pulled over at the Kentucky parking lot and parked next to Samantha. He climbed out of the van and walked to Samantha’s van. He opened her door and pulled her out of the van and straight in to his arms. He climbed in to the van and sat in her seat and pulled her on to his lap and cradled her to his body. He ran his hand over her head as she sobbed. Oh my baby. Dry those tears. I am here now. No need to cry,
Dan said.
I hate that man Henderson. I did pay him. And I did fire him. Because he was harassing me,
She said.
I know sweetheart. I know,
Dan said and Samantha took her tissue and dried her eyes. Dan smiled and held her to his body. She blew her nose.
Now I am all ugly! And it is all your fault!
she said and Dan chortled with laughter.
My fault?
he
