When Our Pets Leave Us Animals in the Spirit World - Jim1537
Foreword
For those of us who love animals, the connection we share with them is one of the most meaningful that we have in our lives. Pets are a source of warmth, laughter, companionship and unconditional love. Especially for those who are alone or disconnected from others, our relationships with our pets may be the most important one in our lives: The cat we come home to care for, the dog who lays his head upon our knee, the cute little ferret that makes us laugh. We literally could not imagine our lives without them.
The deep personal nature of this relationship makes its loss difficult to handle. Our society has mechanisms in place to help us deal with the loss of a loved one. We hold public funerals and memorials; people send condolences and sympathy cards. But when a beloved pet passes away, often, we do not have the support of others to help us with our grief. Often, people who do not understand the connection we shared with an animal trivialize and minimalize the loss.
Traditional religious and theological thoughts and teachings do not always speak to our concerns in a consistent way. St. Francis of Assisi, known as the patron saint of animals, used to preach sermons to the birds. Yet, other religions and congregations may not have specific teachings about the nature of animals’ souls and their place in the afterlife as part of their doctrine. This can make it difficult to
