James is an android! And a bomb! How can that be? Nothing seemed real. Breyden felt like he was falling out of control. That’s not possible. Breyden’s vision darkened around the edges as if he were watching the scene from a great distance, giving the impression it was a dream. I don’t believe it.

I know it’s not easy, Sampson said soberly. But this is a serious problem and we’re going to have to deal with it sooner than later.

What are you suggesting? That I kill my friend? Breyden felt Maya take him by the hand.

I don’t know what we’re going to do, Jack said, shaking his head.

Well, we have to do something. Nick warned. "As long as he’s here, we are all in very real danger! We need to find some place to put him, away from everyone."

Breyden’s mouth opened but nothing came out.

Do you think he knows he isn’t human? Maya asked. I mean, he doesn’t act any different from the rest of us. He has a personality and emotions.

He is a highly advanced robot. I would bet he doesn’t know he isn’t human. I don’t know what telling him would do. the doc stated.

Breyden took several deep breaths. I will tell him. He’s my friend. I may need some proof.

I think you are the one for the job, my friend. Sampson frowned.

Do we know what the trigger is? Breyden asked.

No. We didn’t get a very good look. We told him we were only going to do a minor checkup. We didn’t get a thorough examination. Just enough to realize he wasn’t human, and if Nick hadn’t been in there getting treatment for a wound he received on Centalpha 6, we wouldn’t have known he was a bomb, Jack remarked.

Until we figure out the trigger, I suggest you tell him some place far away from here, Nick suggested and everyone shot a questioning glance his way. Who knows? Maybe that’s what will set him off. Until we get a closer look, we have to take precautions.

Where can we go? Breyden asked.

Maya practically jumped out of her shoes. "You’re not going to the middle of nowhere with a bomb and taking the chance of activating a possible trigger," she shouted.

Maya, Breyden spoke calmly and peered into her eyes. He is my oldest friend, whether he is an android or not. That is the James I grew up with. If there is a chance we can make sure he doesn’t go off, I’m going to take it.

Then I’m going with you. Maya’s lips pursed and her eyes grew wide. And I’m not taking no for an answer.

Breyden couldn’t stop the smile that spread across his face.

    What’s so funny? Maya protested.

Just how serious you look, Breyden said, chuckling. He turned to the others. What precautions can we take? I’m assuming we need to do this, like, yesterday. I don’t want to endanger everyone longer than is needed.

Shaun and Bob are already looking for a location off planet and away from any place the People’s Government would notice…if he goes off. Sampson’s expression was grave. Are you sure you want to let Maya go?

He has no say in the matter, Maya’s voice rose in pitch. "I’m going!"

We are also working on some kind of monitoring device. We can try and zap you out of there if it looks like he is going to explode, Nick added.

Hey, wait a minute. Breyden stared off into space, piecing together parts of a puzzle.

    What? everyone else questioned.

We need Shaun to start a new hack, Breyden said. Look for anything you can find on James and his model. Maybe we can find some way to disable the bomb or at least keep it from going off. If not, maybe you can destroy all information about it. Keep it out of the government’s hands.

That’s a good idea, Sampson agreed. I’ll get his team on it. I can’t make any promises.

Later that night Breyden tossed and turned. He felt exhausted but couldn’t sleep. He wished he had asked the doc for one of those pain pills to knock him out. He’s a bomb. He could kill all of us. How could he not know he isn’t human? These thoughts continued to play through his head in an endless loop as he could barely make out his friend’s silhouette in the darkness only a cot away. The only things interrupting his thoughts were the loud snores coming from the boys. How long until the government figures out what they have and use it?

This constant worrying created a pool of roiling acid inside his gut, making him feel sick to his stomach. His temples throbbed and he started to count sheep in an effort to get some sleep. How will he react when I tell him? I wouldn’t believe anyone who told me I was an android.

Dude, are you in pain? James voice made Breyden’s heart jump.

    No. Why do you ask?

Because you are tossing and turning like a mad man. How can I sleep with all that creaking going on? James yawned.

Breyden tried to calm his heart and control his breathing. Stay still. Let him go back to sleep.

So, what’s bothering you? James asked with another loud yawn, shifting on his cot.

What do you mean? A sinking feeling spread through Breyden’s body, and his head swam until he couldn’t see anything at all.

If you’re not in pain, something is keeping you awake. What’s eating you? James asked. Maybe if you talk it out you’ll fall asleep, and then I can get some shut-eye.

Breyden’s heart pounded against his chest so hard he was sure James could hear it. What if you had to tell someone something they wouldn’t believe? Breyden tried to seek advice while not giving anything away.

What do you have to tell me? James asked, his bed creaking as he adjusted his weight.

Breyden could see by James’s dark outline he was leaning on his forearm, facing him.

What makes you think it’s you? Breyden tried to deflect James’s question.

You were never any good at hiding anything from me. You also forget I was trained just like you to notice anything out of the ordinary, James stated.

Like what? Breyden asked, panic starting to eat at the edges of his mind. Should I tell him now? What if he blows up?

Do you really have to try my skills of observation? James said, chuckling. One, you weren’t this worked up all day. Two, I can’t remember going to sleep or even deciding to go to bed. The last thing I remember was Maya giving all of us something to drink. That means, I was knocked out on purpose so they could tell you something they didn’t want me to hear. So, did I catch some horrible disease on Centalpha 6?

Breyden wondered how his friend felt. He appeared to have emotions the same as everyone else. He had to be worried about what Breyden knew, and yet
