About this ebook

Kai is overjoyed about her pregnancy and her romantic new beginning with Frank, a man who satisfies her heart as much as her extraordinary libido. In spite of the outrageous antics of his salty ex-wife, the two enjoy a passion-filled relationship. The baby Kai is carrying is a miracle all its own, after she received a grim diagnosis that she would never be able to conceive. But what Frank doesn’t know could hurt him because he has no clue that the bun in Kai’s oven may belong to another man. For Kai, it means she will have to get more than her hands dirty to discreetly solve her baby-daddy dilemma.

Meanwhile, Kai uses her skills as an investigative TV reporter to uncover the truth about her sister, LaNaya, now a suspected murderer. The evidence draws Kai into a world of swinger parties, online prostitution, and something far more sinister. As she gets closer to solving the crime, she finds danger right on her own doorstep. In addition to Kai’s off-air drama, her ex-boyfriend crosses a line that can’t be uncrossed when he does the unspeakable.

Playing the role of Kai’s protector, Frank hires a bodyguard to keep her safe, but someone at the security agency causes Kai to look at her relationship from a new perspective. Can Kai’s love for Frank withstand the chaos of the ultimate test? Who really fathered her child? Will Kai catch the real killer and clear her sister’s name before it’s too late?

Kai usually reports on the leading news story, but she suddenly finds herself right in the middle of it. In this second installment of the “Motor City Drama Series,” sex, secrets, and murder make for primetime drama.

CHAPTER 1

It was the happiest but most frightening day of my life. My doctor had just informed me that I was pregnant, and I couldn’t believe it. After my miscarriage several years earlier, I’d been told I could never really expect to have my own biological children. Now, the baby growing inside of me was a blessing seven years in the making. Although I wasn’t really sure who my baby’s father was, I didn’t have any regrets. Instead, I was filled with a deep joy greater than words could express.

Looking out my kitchen window, I saw that the downtown streets were coated with slushy snow, and the Detroit River was frozen solid. Winters in Michigan always made me daydream of relocating to a sundrenched city like Atlanta or Phoenix, but since my family, my career, and the love of my life were all in The D, the odds of me leaving town were less likely than a heat wave in a February weekend forecast.

I put my groceries away and tried not to think about my Maury drama or the threatening phone call I’d received from my ex-boyfriend. Even though Ace was behind bars, that wouldn’t keep someone from his crew from stalking me. I took a deep breath, relieved to be safe inside my apartment, with all the doors and windows securely locked.

All the conflicting emotions left me hungry and exhausted, and after snacking on a few Better Made potato chips and taking a catnap, I woke up craving some real food. I seasoned a large piece of salmon with salt, pepper, fresh basil, and garlic butter. After I slid it into the oven, I stirred some sautéed turnip greens in the pan and boiled some water for wild rice. Rarely did I have time to make a real dinner anymore, but I found cooking to be quite therapeutic for me, and I was enjoying every second of it.

Lately, my life had consisted of reporting on Detroit’s juiciest scandals all day and making love to Frank all night. Usually, we ate out, and I was always his favorite fourth course. At the midnight hour, he never failed to lick my clit until I was delirious with pleasure. Just thinking about the way his talented tongue made my kitty cat purr made me horny.

As if he’d heard my body calling him, a moment later, Frank unlocked my apartment door. He walked in looking like a GQ model in his blue Canali suit, with his coat flung over his shoulder. Frank’s handsome, bronze face lit up with a dimpled smile as he said, Mm. Something smells really good in here!

I hope you like it, I said. By the way, you looked so sexy on the five o’clock news today.

He smiled. Only today?

Well, if I tell you too often, you might get a big head.

Hmm. You’re right, he said with a wink. Then he grabbed me from behind and wrapped his muscular arms around my waist. He planted kisses on my cheek, neck, and lips. As he slipped his tongue in my mouth, I felt his erection press against the small of my back. I haven’t even been home for a full minute, and look what you’ve done to me, he said in a breathy whisper that nearly gave me goosebumps.

Mm…

I hope dinner won’t take too much longer. I’m not sure I can wait for dessert.

Gimme twenty minutes.

I suggest we count down the time together. He fondled one of my breasts and said, One-one thousand… He gently squeezed the other one. Two-one thousand… He reached around and toyed with the warm, quickly dampening place between my thighs. Three-one thousand…

Oh, baby, you turn me on so much, but you need to be patient. I’ve got a little surprise in store for you.

He grinned. A surprise? What is it?

I shook my head. Patience!

Can’t I at least have a hint? You know how much I hate waiting, especially when it comes to you, sexy.

Why don’t you go change into something more comfortable? By then, the surprise will be ready for you. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

I’m sure I won’t…and I bet it’s gonna be delicious.

How can you be so sure? You even haven’t tasted it yet.

He laughed. Girl, your whole body is a platter, and I never run out of things to sample.

I giggled. "I was talking about dinner."

Oh. Well, that too.

***

A while later, we sat across from each other, enjoying the home-cooked meal I’d prepared. The salmon was seasoned to perfection, the wild rice was fluffy, and the greens rivaled my mother’s soulful recipe. I was proud of my culinary creation, and Frank complimented me several times. He even insisted on washing the dishes.

While he washed and dried, I sat on the living room couch with my feet propped up. I loved his considerate nature just as much as I loved the way he brought out my freaky side between the sheets.

From the kitchen, he asked, Red or white, baby?

Neither, I said, knowing alcohol was off limits since I was pregnant. I only hoped it wouldn’t make him catch on to the surprise before I told him, because I usually didn’t turn down an after-dinner drink.

You sure?

Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just…watching my figure. Y’all might get beer bellies, but I sure as heck don’t want wine thighs!

Wine thighs? What are you talking about? He walked into the living room, holding a glass of pinot noir, and sat down next to me. You’ve got the sexiest thighs I’ve ever seen…and don’t even get me started on what’s between them.

I smiled. You never quit, do you?

He sipped his wine. Kai, now that I’ve finally got you back in my life, it feels like a new beginning for us. Even when we retire, I’m gonna be actin’ like a dirty ol’ man, still trying get up under your skirt. Sure, I might have to pop a little blue pill to keep you satisfied, but, baby, I’m always gonna want you from head to toe. Hell, ya might like me even better when I’m a senior citizen, especially when I take my dentures out. He pressed his lips together like a toothless old man. Now bring your fine self over here and quit teasing me!

Frank! I giggled as he fondled my thighs.

He brought his hand up to my face and stroked my cheek gently. Seriously, I think about our future all the time, Kai. I’m so happy to finally be with you, the way I’ve always wanted to be. I love you so much, baby.

I love you, too, Frank, but…well, there’s something I need to tell you. Actually, a couple things. You want the good news or bad news first?

He picked up his wine glass and took a sip. Let’s get the bad news outta the way. Hit me with it, baby.

I got a threatening phone call today…it was Ace.

What!? Why didn’t you tell me?

You were about to go on the air, and I knew you had that big interview with the mayor, so I didn’t want to—

Listen…I don’t care if I’m about to interview the President. You need to let me know immediately if anything like that happens again.

You’re right. I’m sorry.

What’s he want with you anyway?

I think it’s because LaNaya’s trial is coming up soon, I explained, a half-truth if there ever was one. I didn’t want to tell Frank I’d lost my virginity to Ace seventeen years ago or that we’d engaged in erotic phone sex during one of my recent dry spells. Although my relationship with Frank had endured a lot of drama in the past, I didn’t want pile on any more complications now that we were in a good place.

What’s your sister’s case have to with anything?

He tried to pin the murder on her in the police interrogation video. I’m so scared, Frank.

As far as I can see, there’s only one solution. We’ve gotta hire some security for you.

You mean…a bodyguard? Don’t you think that’s a little much?

I’m your man, Kai, so it’s my responsibility to take care of you. With all the hectic hours I work, I can’t think of anything else that makes sense. I mean, I don’t know what I’d do if… Kai, do you even understand how much you mean to me? I love you so, so much.

I love you too. I kissed him on the cheek and stood up.

Where are you going?

It’s time for the good news now.

Well, you’ve got my curiosity piqued now for sure. He smiled, looking a bit concerned. All this anticipation is too much.

I went into the kitchen, opened the cabinet, and pulled out a white box. C’mere, I called out from the dining room.

He walked over and asked, What is this?

Open it.

He unfolded the cardboard flaps and revealed a cake, decorated with baby rattles and Congratulations, Daddy! written in green frosting. Instantly, his eyes grew wide. You mean…

Yep! Frank, we’re expecting!

He walked around the table, hugged me tightly, and kissed my lips. How far along are you?

Let’s put it this way…I’m pretty sure it happened on New Year’s Eve, I said with a smile, even though I knew I’d probably gotten pregnant a week earlier, around Christmas. I had never thought of myself as the kind of woman who would have unprotected sex with two different men that close together, but that was exactly what I’d done. In the span of seven unforgettable December days, I’d lost one love and rekindled another. My biggest deception was being dishonest with Frank about the timing of my breakup with Deandre, but my number one priority was to do whatever was best for my child, and that meant letting Frank play the role of the baby’s daddy, whether or not he actually was.

He winked. New Year’s Eve, huh? Well, that’s no surprise, considering what we were up to when the ball dropped. He stroked my face. This is so wonderful, Kai.

I smiled. I know. I can’t wait.

That makes two of us. I’ll never forget when you were in the hospital, after we lost our first baby. I felt so…helpless. But this time, I’m gonna be there for you 1,000 percent. I always knew it would happen for us eventually, and I’m so grateful for you and our child.

A tear slid down my cheek. After what the doctors told me, I thought I’d never—

He wiped my tear away and lifted my chin. You’re going to be a great mother.

That’s all I’ve ever wanted to be. Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate my career and everything I’ve accomplished, but this baby is the most precious thing in the world to me.

He kissed my neck again and whispered, I love that you’re having my baby. He planted kisses along my collarbone. And after this one is born, I wanna make another one with you.

Really?

Yeah, so how about we get in some early practice? He wrapped his arms around me and pulled my body close to his. He lifted my chin and pressed his lips into mine. His tongue danced with mine, moistening my panties. Finally, he pulled away from our sensual kiss and led me into our bedroom.

CHAPTER 2

The full moon cast a soft, yellow light onto Frank’s handsome face. I lay on my bed in my purple satin lacy bra and panties, looking into his dark brown eyes. He was on top of me, wearing nothing but plaid boxers. I wrapped my arms around his toned, strong back. After a seven-year, on-again/off-again affair, my passion for him had only heightened. I had no doubt that he was my soulmate, because my heartbeat doubled its pace as he kissed me.

Frank’s cell phone rang, and I knew from the sound of Usher’s infamous breakup song, Papers, that it was Tisha, his ex-wife. Technically, they were still married, but their divorce would be finalized soon. He reached for his phone on the nightstand.

Why don’t you let it go to voicemail?

Nah, I’d better get it, just in case.

In case of what? I said, arching my eyebrow as I wrapped both my hands around his rock-hard dick.

For an answer, he moaned, and his eyes rolled back in his head.

I kept stroking him, harder and faster.

Ooh, God, Kai…

What, baby? Do you want me to stop?

I won’t ask you to stop, but could you, uh…put it on pause for a minute? I promise this won’t take too long.

I pulled my hands away, a bit miffed and insulted.

He sat up in bed and answered the call, snapping into the phone, Why are you calling me this late?

Although Tisha’s voice was slightly muffled through the speaker on Frank’s phone, I could still hear her say, Why’d you even pick up? I’m sure your girlfriend doesn’t approve, unless she had a change of heart about my little indecent proposal. I’m still down for a threesome, ya know, if you can convince your prudish mistress to join in on the fun.

Enough of that shit, Tisha. What do you want?

"You can start by not being so damn cheap. The alimony payment your lawyer proposed won’t cover the mortgage on this house and the condo in Miami. Hell, I might even have to give up my Aston Martin!"

So what? I bought you a damn X5 for you for your birthday last year. Drive that.

The BMW was a nice gesture, darling, but with all due respect, losing my DB9 would be like…a death in the family.

Listen to yourself, Tisha. Do you have any concept of reality, or have you always been this out of touch?

You’re treading a very slippery slope, my dear Franklin. It would be in your best interest to stop playing games. What’s your reputation worth to you anyway? Surely you’d rather part with $50,000 a month than to risk my wrath. My lawyer tells me I’m entitled to far more, but I have no intention of leaving you penniless.

We’ll see what happens in court when I tell the judge that my family status has changed.

Family status? What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Kai and are having a baby.

She chuckled. "Ha! You’re such a terrible liar, Franklin. You always have been, you poor thing. We both know that little bitch is damaged goods in the conception department. Your desperation is laughable. What did you do? Hire a surrogate? Adopt a
