About this ebook

Just when Ally thought she’d escaped the Atrile...

Ally and Stem have broken out of Station Nephal and are on their way to Earth, but a brief stop at Gateway brings them face to face with their greatest enemies. The Atrile have long memories and big ships and won’t stop until Ally and her friends are dead.
Gateway is the stage for Ally’s toughest battle yet but it’s more than just a space station. If Ally can survive the attack and rescue her friend, maybe she can strike back and take the fight to the Atrile. There’s even a chance she can convince someone that humans aren’t evil.

Part six of A Game of War blows Ally’s world right open as she realises just how big the universe is and wonders whether she’ll live to see it.

Michael Cairns

Michael Cairns was born at a young age and could write even before he could play the drums, but that was long ago, in the glory days - when he actually had hair. He loves chocolate, pineapple, playing gigs and outwitting his young daughter (the scores are about level but she's getting smarter every day). Michael is currently working hard on writing, getting enough sleep and keeping his hair. The first is going well, the other two...not so much. His current novels include: > Young adult, science fiction adventure series, 'A Game of War' 1. Childhood dreams 2. The end of innocence 3. Playing God 4. Breathing in space 5. Escape 6. Gateway to earth > Urban fantasy super-hero series, 'The Planets' 1. The spirit room 2. The story of Erie 3. The long way home >Paranormal horror post apocalyptic zombie series, 'Thirteen Roses' 1. Intro

    Oh, hell, oh no, no.

She slammed on the thrusters and the Vale lurched, then jumped forward. From the cabin she heard Lucid grunt as he was thrown onto the floor. Atan grabbed her chair just in time, swinging round on one foot as they accelerated. She leaned on the sticks and took them down, and away from the Homeships.

    They're launching, we've got pursuers.

Stem was staring wide-eyed at the screens, one hand resting lightly on the firing stick. She saw from the corner of her eye his other hand tracing the paths of the emerging fighters. On another screen, Ally watched as Bridyant and the others also switched course, sticking with her. Stem gave feedback, though Ally barely heard it, letting herself slip into the spiritual, her hands moving unconsciously on the sticks.

OK, there's about ten of them, all small, all heading straight for us.

Bridyant's voice came through the communications link.

    Do we fight?

I don't know, let me check with Ally. We can take them, four against ten.

    I agree. Ally?

She dragged herself back to her body, blinking, then staring again at the screens. Every part of her was screaming that they should run, just get out, but they had precious little air, and she didn't want to run, not anymore.

    Chapter 1

They'll be humans, gamers just like we were, disabling shots only. Did everyone get that?

Murmurs of assent came through from the others, and she slipped out again. Stem joined her, their minds coming together, and she managed a quiet warning to Atan.

You'll wanna find somewhere to sit.

The next second, the Vale stopped dead, then spun around, leaving the others to race past. She dragged the nose up and they were hurtling toward their pursuers on the angle, coming up underneath. She twitched the nose and he fired the front cannon, the first shot tearing an engine clean out the back of their nearest attacker. She rolled back again, coming cockpit to cockpit, and the rockets streamed out, crashing through the wings of another ship, sending it spinning, helpless.

She was aware of the others now joining the fray. Bridyant was predictably smooth and efficient as her guns took the nose of one of the enemy, leaving it direction-less, charging out into space. The other ship, crewed by people she still barely knew, but fighting beside her nonetheless, were equally impressive, and within minutes, the numbers were level.

A thought found its way through the battle haze, so audacious she felt Stem shiver as he caught it. She felt Atan also, hovering on the spiritual plane, observing, and she spoke to him.

Contact Bridyant, tell her we're going for a Homeship.

She felt his surprise, then his smile and turned her attention back to the fight. The remaining slaves had split up, one trailing after them, but staying far enough back to avoid any sudden manoeuvres she might try. She reached out, feeling the mind of the pilot, only to realise he almost had a lock on them. Seconds later, he fired and she yanked the Vale into evasive action, rolling left and down, the cannon fire passing wide of them.

As she spun and danced, she was impressed that he stayed back, not allowing himself to be pulled into the pattern. She spread her awareness and found Bridyant, also being pursued, though more clumsily, by a one-man-er.

Bridyant, how about we help each other out?

Come past my right side and across my nose, nice and close.

Ally angled the Vale down, then fell into step with Bridyant, the two ships only metres apart. Once her pursuer had come around behind, she accelerated and pulled in front of her friend. She watched in the screen as her attacker failed to take the bait, keeping well clear of Bridyant and instead firing another shot that fell just low of their belly. She hissed, struggling to find her focus, but as she pulled back toward Bridyant, the one-man-er dropped into their sights. Stem took the back of the ship off with a cannon shot.

Thank you both, now perhaps we can deal with your opponent.

Bridyant had maintained her course, but now swung abruptly, coming around sharply to aim straight for the enemy ship. The pilot seemed surprised by the manoeuvre and bolted, cutting across Ally's line. Stem used a rocket to trash the engines and as quickly as it had started, the battle was over. Ten slave ships hung motionless in space, smoke making globes around tattered engines.

Ally turned her attention to the Homeship that had sent the attackers, and leaned on the sticks. The other Homeships would attack soon, the humans on board even now clambering into their cockpits. They had minutes at best. Bridyant fell in beside her, and the massive bulk grew larger and larger until it filled the screens. Bridyant spoke through the comms.
