Background: Eugene McGillicudy is actually Captain Awesome! Fighter of the evil super villains, including Queen Stinkypants, hit baby sister. But how is he supposed to do all this when he can’t even find his cape and has just moved to a new place.

Review: Captain Awesome to the Rescue! is a very cute story about a young boy who believes he is a superhero and takes this secret with him everywhere…to fight the evil of his new hometown. It is wonderfully illustrated and imaginative, with Eugene’s superhero presence everywhere, including at his new school. The spacing and pictures make it great for beginning readers, and while the content may make them want to fight crime as well, it is a very captivating story for the young.

(I am no longer 8. I suspect that if I was, I would've loved this. As it was, well. It's no Captain Underpants.)

Reason for Reading: Ds read aloud as his reader.A beginning chapter book for five to eight year olds and yet not written down to children that it keeps the attention of older reluctant or struggling readers. My autistic son is 12 and quite enjoyed himself with Captain Awesome & Turbo's first adventure. I also was very pleased. Nice large text, pictures on every 2-page spread, often more than one, makes use of all typical superhero devices and connects with the child as they imagine someone like themselves becoming a superhero and saving their family, town, school, etc. The language is simple at this reading level and yet it manages to contain humour, a fun plot and typical kidspeak, "dude". We have some others in the series and ds is looking forward to the further adventures of. Great start to a welcome new series especially appealing to boys.

Where’s my Captain Awesome cape? Eugene grumbled as he searched his closet. He tossed clothes back over his head, covering a stack of Super Dude comic books.

Psssst! Want to know a secret? It’s the most hugest, gigantist, enormondoist secret ever. The boy looking for his cape is not just eight-year-old Eugene McGillicudy, son of Ned and Betsy, and brother to his little sister, Molly. He’s also the superhero known as Captain Awesome!

Say it out loud:

Eugene came up with that name himself. That’s one of the cool things about being a superhero. You get to pick your own name. And if you’re making up your own superhero name, it shouldn’t be something lame like Captain Just Okay. It should be mighty, like . . . Captain Awesome! MI-TEE!

Eugene plopped on the pile of clothes and crossed his arms. Next time, I’ll remember to follow Superhero Rule number one: Never let your mom pack your superhero stuff when you’re moving to a new town. I bet Super
