About this ebook

Three thousand years ago the Lord said to Solomon: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Again, today the Lord is saying to us: “If My people – that is to say, the people who are called by the name Christian – will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
As this verse from 2 Chronicles tells us, the Lord is seeking a close relationship with His people where we humble ourselves and pray and seek His face so that He can show us our wicked ways – ways that we too often do not see, or ways we choose to overlook as just being part of the American culture. Then if we see our wicked ways, He will give us the will and the power to turn from these wicked ways by the cleansing blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, and the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. Thus He will bring a great revival to heal our land.
And it all starts with prayer.
Prayer is speaking with God. Prayer is a conduit to bring God’s kingdom and God’s will to “earth as it is in heaven”. Prayer is an awesome privilege. The importance and power of prayer is one of the key messages of God’s word, and it has been recognized as such by many of God’s servants.
My hope is that this small book will help make the true meaning of prayer a reality in your life so that you speak with God. I also hope that this concise summary on prayer will both speak to today’s culture of sound-bite statements and visual images, and, by using ample reference to God’s word, allow the maximum opportunity for the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of the readers.
In SPEAKING WITH GOD you will find: fifteen different prayer situations; ten ways the Lord speaks to us; seven ways we obstruct the Lord's voice; seven reasons God appears to be silent; and three reasons we should fast and pray. Together they provide a beautiful tapestry of how to have a conversation with our living Lord that not only teaches us how to humble ourselves and pray and seek His face, but also feeds directly into the practical needs of life.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

My mother, Vera May Fenner, prayed for 25 years that I would come to know Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, and thus she became a powerful example to me of the power of persevering in prayer.

In my early years of walking with Jesus—when my wife and I lived in southern California—Tori Yamada, Pastor Gordy Duncan, Al Phau, Mark Wogahn, Denny Fitzpatrick, and the Roots of Righteousness prayer team at Calvary Community Church all had a blessed impact on my prayer life by their faithfulness in prayer

More recently—during the time my wife and I have lived in Katy, Texas—Sharon Tice, Connie Sloan, Pastor Mike Kelley, Pastor Brian Stone, and Lisa Allison have been wonderful encouragers and partners in speaking with our Lord in prayer.

My thanks go to Bobbie Wedgeworth for the loving care she put into the copy editing process. Also my thanks go to Paul Westervelt for his encouragement to continue writing and to publish this book.

    CHAPTER 1: SPEAKING WITH GOD

Recognizing the awesome privilege of prayer

    KNOWING HIM

It was 4:00 o’clock in the afternoon when I started to walk on the Arroyo Burro beach at Santa Barbara, California, heading west towards Goleta. As I walked, I reviewed in my mind the events of the last two years: events that had resulted in me leaving a good job in the oil industry; convincing my wife that we should move to Santa Barbara so that I could complete a book on motivation; and now experiencing a complete block in my writing, so that fulfillment of what was on my heart seemed impossible.

I had been brought up in a wonderful Christian home, but had turned against the church when I was fourteen years old and found the teaching irrelevant to real life. As I passed through the English equivalent of high school and moved on to college in London University, I became an atheist and joined the college Humanist Society. I retained this worldview through my twenties and thirties. Recently, however, there
