About this ebook

Now an animated series on Disney Junior!

They might be chicks, but they sure aren’t chicken, and they’re on a mission. And on this, their first (mis)adventure “in this delightful spinoff of the J.J. Tully series” (Kirkus Reviews), the Chicken Squad launches a galactic backyard expedition.

Meet the Chicken Squad: Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie. These chicks are not your typical barnyard puffs of fluff, and they are not about to spend their days pecking chicken feed and chasing bugs. No sir, they’re too busy solving mysteries and fighting crime.

So when Squirrel comes barreling into the chicken coop, the chicks know they’re about to get a case. But with his poor knowledge of shapes (“Big” is not a shape, Squirrel!) and utter fear of whatever it is that’s out there, the panicky Squirrel is NO HELP. Good thing these chicks are professionals.

But even professionals get worried. Especially once they see that round, shiny, green, BIG thing in the yard. What if it’s a UFO full of aliens who want chickens as pets, or worse, dinner? It’s up to the Chicken Squad to crack a case that just might be out of this world.

The chicken squad is about a funny group of chickens who solve mysteries and fight crime. They are all different chickens and have different strengths and personalities. This is a good early chapter book because it has few words on each page and illustrations. Would use this for primary to third. Illustrations: mixed media

It's a mystery that only four small chicks can solve. . . maybe!Informed by an alarmed squirrel of a mysterious object in their backyard, Dirt, Sugar, Sweetie, and Poppy (love those names!) bravely set out to investigate. With a good deal of wacky humor, miscommunication, and terrific illustrations, this little mystery will undoubtedly be solved by the reader before the chicks figure it out. Reluctant readers will have fun with this short and snappy book. AR 3.3, pts. 0.5 (although subsequent books have 1.0 pts.) JF

This book hilarious when I read it the other day. I was not expecting this much humor In a 3 rd grade level book. I really like the moment that the squirrel over came his fear of a dog, and was able to face the dog. This book I would highly recommend it to other teachers to have In their collection of books. I will buy this book for my future class because it caught my eye, and that is something I want to do is for the students to be captured by the book they are reading. The book had a few vocabulary words that could be a good chapter book that they have to look up words they are not familiar with, and find what they mean by using context clues.

This is a spin-off of the J. J. Tully series. The chicks now have their own series. The chicks get their first client, a squirrel. I loved how Sugar sees the clues differently than the others. J. J. has to come to the rescue but the chicks are fun as they solve their first mystery despite the clues. Don't let the facts stand in the way. This is a wonderful series for beginning readers.

A scaredy cat squirrel seeks the chickens help in combatting an enormous...something...something big...something scary...in the backyard. A fun little first mystery.

Has some funny moments, but ultimately falls a little flat. Film Noir is not a style that kids are generally familiar with, so it needs more hand-holding. That being said, the 7-year-old asked for it again the next night. The pictures are great, although some towards the end get caught in the gutter. I love the book design overall- text size, ratio of text to art. It's perfect for newly proficient readers.

Introductions

Welcome to the yard!

Meet the Chicken Squad: Four fuzzy little chicks who should fill their days pecking chicken feed and chasing bugs but instead spend most of their time looking for trouble and finding it. My job is to pull them out of it. My name’s J. J. Tully, retired search-and-rescue dog. Seven years on the job, two years in the yard. Keep your eye on these four:

Dirt: Short, yellow, fuzzy

Real Name: Peep

Specialty: Foreign languages, math, colors, computer codes

Sugar: Short, yellow, fuzzy

Real Name: Little Boo

Specialty: Breaking and entering, interrupting

Poppy: Short, yellow, fuzzy

Real Name: Poppy

Specialty: Watching the shoe (will explain later)

Sweetie: Short, yellow, fuzzy

Real Name: Sweet Coconut Louise

Specialty: None that I can see

Here’s the thing: I can’t watch them all the time.
