      You would think that 26 bestselling mystery writers could come up with an incredible plot, scintillating dialogue and an unforgettable read. Well, they didn't -- not in this story. It was very predictable, not interesting at all and very forgettable.

      No Rest For the Dead is unique in that it is a single story written by a collaboration of over 20 authors including Jeffrey Deaver, Faye Kellerman, Kathy Reichs and Alexander McCall Smith to name just a few. I imagine it was a huge project for David Baldacci to coordinate such a high profile stable of authors.In No Rest For The Dead, a museum curator disappears only for his body to be discovered in a medieval museum piece that has been shipped half a world a way. His wife, Rosemary, who has tolerated her philandering husband’s arrogance for years. is the primary suspect and despite the lack of definitive evidence, she is sentenced to death and summarily executed for the crime. Ten years later, the investigating officer, whose life collapsed in the wake of the case, and close friends of Rosemary, hold a memorial for her. They hope the gathering will at last expose the real killer and clear her name.While the individual nuance’s of each author’s voice is evident, the story flows effortlessly and cohesively. It is a masterful plot that delves into the lives of Rosemary and her husband, unearthing a cast that is rife with suspicious characters involved in corruption, theft, drugs and adultery. Several of the main characters have the opportunity to share their perspectives and theories of the crime. Each has a piece of the puzzle that they are loathe to share but even as the story unfolds and the suspect pool narrows, the truth is still the shock it is intended to be.As a fan of mystery/crime , and with several of my favourite authors contributing to No Rest For the Dead, I simply could not resist the offer to review this title. It is a gripping mystery from some of the genre’s best writers – and not to be missed.

      Twenty-six of the best mystery writers get together to write a book. Normally you would think, yeah, a bunch of short stories but not in this case, they actually write a complete mystery and Wow, what a mystery they write.

      There is a good explanation about how they manage this feat but it doesn't really explain the magic. This is a solid, tight mystery with plenty of twists and turns. I did wonder at one point if I had the solution but I certainly didn't come up with the entire finish!

      I'm not even going to try and explain the story, it needs to be read to even follow. I was actually a bit hesitant because of the premise but it was done so well that I didn't even notice how fast I was flying through the chapters. I had a family picnic and a six hour drive home in the middle of this book and still finished it in two days!

      One thing I wanted to do was see if I could retain who wrote which sections and keep track of some of my favorite authors. Wrong, the pages kept turning and as soon as I started the next chapter I completely forgot who was writing that particular chapter.

      The proceeds from this book are going to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, something that just makes it more worth buying.

      Twenty-six mystery writers combine their talents to create one story about a woman who is put to death after being wrongly accused of her husband's murder. The ending is not unexpected in this depressing story, which tracks the mystery and the lives of each character before and after the execution. The authors' voices and styles are blended well except for the beginning of a few chapters which may throw readers for a bit as the story changes authors. The best part of the story is the fact that proceeds go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

      Ten years ago Jon Nunn investigated the murder of a museum curator. A murder performed in a most unlikely way. All evidence pointed to Rosemary Thomas having killed her husband in a jealous rage. Ten years ago Jon Nunn was convinced he had the right suspect and had even gone to her execution. However, the case always haunted him in some of its inconsistencies eventually costing him his job and his marriage. Can the case finally be solved on the eve of an odd memorial to Rosemary ten years after her execution.

      The interesting thing about this book is that it was written by 26 different authors. A virtual who’s who of mystery and thriller writers including, Sandra Brown, Diana Galbaldon, Tess Gerritson, Alexander McCall Smith, Kathy Reichs … the lists goes on and on. With a talent pool as deep as this one would expect a well crafted story. And it was. The thing that did not work for me was the fact that the writing styles were so different and the fact that some of the book was narrated and some of the book was written in first person. It detracted from the flow of the story. Despite that it was a good who-done-it, with a suspect list as long as the book’s list of authors. An interesting twist at the end, that a reader may or may not see coming wrapped it all up nicely.

      It is a shining example of a brilliant work by 26 separate authors coming together to write one murder mystery. Each author contributing a separate chapter following the creativity of the one before him/her. And, this was a good one that I couldn't put down.It has a little of everything, money, greed, art, death, betrayal, guilt, suspense and an ending difficult to predict.When a rich heiress is put to death via lethal injection, the evidence pointed to her killing of her husband.A curator of a successful museum, a consummate liar and cheater, he was missing after she had a public meltdown at a prestigious art gala, announcing to the public that he was basically a slime ball for wanting a divorce after all she did to bring him where he was.His body is found weeks later in Germany in a torture device called the Iron Maiden. On loan at the San Francisco museum, it was returned to a prestigious German museum with a well-decomposed body inside.The main character is a detective, Jon Nunn, who worked on the case and had a large hand in pointing the evidence toward the heiress, resulting in her execution.Nunn's life was ruined by guilt, and in the ensuing years as alcohol took over, he lost his wife and position. He always felt she might have been innocent.Ten years later, a group of savory and successful characters are called to the museum on the anniversary of the wife's execution.This action packed novel takes the reader to both the upper crust and the lower, poorer people who do the bidding of the rich.It is Jon Nunn who returns to place all the savory threads together, confirming just how wrong he was to lack the ability to follow his instincts that she was not guilty.This is a great page turner. And, it was a great buy for only $1.99 at Bookcloseouts.com back in January when I went on a buying spree during their sale.Highly recommended.

There was plenty of tension and enough to keep me turning the pages. I just cannot say enough how this good this book was.There wasn’t a problem for me that the book was by 26 different authors and it seemed that they all worked well together for the final story and the book flowed as if it had been just one author.I would highly recommend this book for any crime fan and well done at all the authors for such a unique reading experience for me.

      I thought this was pretty great the story itself was ok, but I loved the collaboration of 26 mystery writers each continuing the same story. I’ve never read some of the writers, so it was great to get an idea of their style of writing.

      I was particularly wary of this novel, only because I have never read a collaborative work before. With that said, the contributing authors included many of my favourites, and I trusted their judgement – feeling that they would not be involved in such a project if it wasn’t worthwhile. I’m glad I gave it a shot, because No Rest for the Dead is nothing short of spectacular and magnificent. With an extraordinary line-up of authors including Alexander McCall Smith, Tess Gerritsen, Jeffrey Deaver, Diana Gabaldon, Jeff Lindsay, R.L. Stine and Kathy Reichs, the story flows seamlessly and each author brings something unique to each chapter to create one of the better crime novels I’ve read in 2011.

      I read the opening couple of chapters on the bus ride home, and was instantly moved. Without giving too much away, the opening chapter describes the process of administering a lethal injection in such graphic and uncompromising detail. I was completely hooked. What follows is the extraordinary tale of Rosemary and Christopher Thomas and the art world in which they live in. Christopher is potentially the most loathsome character I’ve read about in years – a womanising and shady man and curator at a San Francisco gallery, who will stoop to incredible levels to make more money. What could have been a promising career turned sour as his greed and ambition destroyed any chance of happiness or fulfilment – he simply can’t help wanting more. And yet without his wife, he would be nothing. Rosemary comes from an incredibly wealthy family, and helped establish a life for her husband and children. Sick and tired of watching her husband flaunt his ways, Rosemary causes a scene at a public event at the gallery and after a vocal argument, the two leave the gallery. Christopher Thomas is never seen again.

      With overwhelming evidence pointing to one suspect, Detective John Nunn has no choice but to follow the trail and arrest Rosemary. The case takes its toll on Nunn and his personal life, and we re-join him some ten years in the future; a shadow of his former self and still unsettled over the Thomas murder. When a ten-year memorial is raised by a friend close to the Thomas family, Nunn seizes the opportunity to have all the original suspects back together on the same night. No Rest for the Dead is no Agatha Christie novel, where the detective pieces the puzzle together. Nor is it a game of Cleudo, where logical deduction solves the case. Everyone had motives, everyone had means. If Rosemary was innocent – who killed Christopher Thomas?

      The twists and turns that lead to the stunning conclusion are expertly delivered by some of the world’s greatest crime writers and with an ample pool of suspects, the revelation of the killer’s identity, as suggested by David Baldacci in the introduction, came as a huge surprise to me. I love nothing more than being surprised. Read this!
