    Sleep.

    I needed sleep.

    Badly.

My mind wanted to turn off, but I wouldn't let it. You wouldn't either if you were being stalked by a nightmarish figure that you only saw during your waking hours. I couldn't let it get me. I didn't want to know what it wanted from me or wanted to do to me.

POOM-POOM-POOM! The pounding grew louder, more aggressive. He was trying to break the door down now.

I felt around in the dark for the window latch, found it, and turned it. I pulled upward again, expecting to meet with crisp, cool, rural air, but I was met by nothing but a stubbornly-stuck window. Either painted or nailed shut.

The door behind me thudded—boom, boom, BOOM! I could hear the cheap
