    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    PREFACE

On a winter afternoon in 2012, I experienced a sudden, unexpected shift in consciousness in which I sighted an angelic being. It was in the sky, high above the farm where my two horses were living. A few months later, my older horse, who was ill, received help from this same being.

These events, when I described them to others, created genuine interest, and I was encouraged to write down what had happened.

"Write it now, while it's still fresh in your mind," a friend advised.

Eventually, I agreed. I organized the notes I had made at the times of the initial sighting and the interaction with Baton Rouge, the horse; but something seemed incomplete. Interesting as they were in themselves, I felt that these experiences would be much more meaningful within the context of other significant events in Baton's life. So I kept writing, and soon a pattern emerged—a story of love, healing, and growth.

This is a personal account, very different from my previous writing, which was academic or instructional in nature. However, I have tried to explain briefly my understanding of all the events and the rationale for my actions. The Notes also contain books and articles that I have found personally helpful.

I had never seen an angel before these experiences, although I had read and heard descriptions of them. For many years, I had studied comparative religion and philosophy at the Theosophical Society in New York City.[1] I learned meditation there, which I have practiced regularly for almost forty years. This certainly has made me more sensitive to subtle influences, but it has not brought me clairvoyance.

My healing teacher, however, had exceptional clairvoyant abilities. I was one of many nurses who learned the Therapeutic Touch method of subtle energy healing from Dora Kunz.[2] I studied with her long enough to respect not only the accuracy of her clairvoyant ability, but also the highly ethical manner in which she used her gift.

Dora would sometimes describe, in her lectures and classes, some of the great angels and smaller nature spirits that she had seen. My experiences, as told here, are consistent with Dora's accounts, as well as with those of other clairvoyants.

Everything in the story that follows is true, although I changed some names upon request. And since the events took place over an eleven-year period, I condensed the material out of consideration for the reader and focused on the main idea: the interplay between the inner and outer dimensions of our lives.

I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Pamela Bond Contractor of Ellipsis Consulting, who typed and edited my handwritten chapters. Tish Jamieson helped to guide me into the new realm of e-publishing.

I am also grateful for the good friends I have made through the horses: those mentioned in the following pages, as well as many others. It is to them that this book is dedicated.

    CHAPTER 1

A Great Being in the Sky

It was three o'clock in the afternoon on February 17, 2012. I was inside the barn waiting for the saddle fitter. He was very late, and I was starting to get irritated. Should I just cancel the appointment and go home? I picked up the cell phone, but then thought twice and put it down.

No, I would have to wait. The saddles were due to be repadded, and I did not want the horses' backs becoming sore. To pass the time, I decided to take them out to the back field to graze. I put the halter on Poco, the younger horse, and led him from the stall into the hallway.

In view of the circumstances, and my frame of mind, what happened next was quite extraordinary:

The walls and ceiling of the barn somehow faded from my sight. Up in the sky, above the fields, I saw a slender golden energy form radiating thin strands of white and golden light. It seemed to have a face, although I could not discern any features, above which was a rounded golden arch resembling a halo. I'm not sure to what extent I was using my
