About the Author
Auric and the Wolf
Before he was king of the greatest nation man had ever made, Auric was a boy who helped on his family's farm. From the day he was old enough to pull rocks from the garden, he set to work. As long as there was light in the sky, he was out in the fields, watching cattle or sheep, tending the crops, or bringing in the harvest. His mother tried to educate him, mainly during the long winter evenings when the earth was turned to frost and the livestock were stabled. Mostly, though, his life was farm work.

The golden-haired boy was thinking such dark thoughts as the family's sad old donkey hauled the heavy plow back toward the Dividing Line, the eerie natural border between humanity's freehold and the true wilderness beyond. There was a steep ridge there, a thirty foot dropoff to barren, rocky land for twenty paces at the bottom of the cliff. He eyed the dense forest that grew at the other edge of the Dividing Line. Already the deep shadows there made it dark as night among the twisted trees. He could see movement, but at that distance, he couldn't make out anything specific. He swallowed a lump in his throat, and swiped the back of a hand across his forehead to wipe away the sweat.
High overhead, a bird called out suddenly, and he jumped.
He laughed at himself, all alone in the far field. The sound of
