Gone Mything
Barry the dragon lived in a constant state to prove himself. Being the lead dragon of a family of four, it was up to him to scour the mountain they resided in, prowling through the deep caves to locate small creatures for the dragons to snack on. He even started up his own business, bringing out the best of his qualities by becoming a freelance damsel holder, advertising fantastic rates for sleeping in audaciously large tower rooms with a fair damsel trapped in the room above. Despite his frugal food hunting and failing business, the absolute worst thing to happen to his ego was the day he discovered he didn't exist.
The shock happened on one fated Sunday. He usually spent his Sunday afternoons sitting in his large armchair in the mountain, reading (or, if no newspapers fluttered on the wind into his cave in the past week, re-reading) human newspapers with a giant magnifying glass. Fate had blessed this day, as a paper with news no less than two months old entered his domain, meaning that he had the most up-to-date information that he's had in a long time. It was no surprise then that he got to reading straightaway, taking in the words with voracious speed.
One word made him trip up.
Barry wiggled his snout. He snorted a plume of smoke from his nostrils. He squinted, brought the magnifying glass closer to the page, and started to silently mime the action of speaking the word with his scaled mouth. He looked up, his eyes locking onto nothingness as he chewed the word over in his mind. Finally, he gave up.
Cathy,
he said over his shoulder. Cathy, what the bloody hell is a 'myth'?
A miff?
Cathy's face appeared through the stone-chiselled door frame, an apron protecting her belly from the washing-up she was doing in a natural underground pool. Use it in a sentence, Barry, me brain's not what it used to be.
It says it, right here.
Barry brought the magnifying glass back to the newspaper. 'Happy St. Georges day,' it says. ‘Today is a special day to celebrate Saint George, a Greek that lived from 275 to 281 AD. We all know him for the famous tale of St. George slaying a dragon, but nobody needs to worry about winged creatures invading on this day, for we also know that dragons are just a myth'. Here, it says we're a myth, Cathy.
"Oh,
