About this ebook

Every child wants to appease Santa. All except one, that is.

Cassandra once again ruins a Christmas Eve celebration and is lectured by Santa for her bad behaviour. She receives the standard punishment -- a single lump of coal -- but baffles everyone by smiling the entire time. Could Cassandra have an ulterior motive for her naughtiness? A humorous Christmas short story totalling around 3,100 words.

This comes with a bonus short story, 'Coal New Problem', where Santa wages war on the bad children of the world and ends up on the receiving end of the fight. Another humorous Christmas short story at 3,200 words.

    A Lump of Coal

Nobody sat next to Cassandra during Christmas Eve dinner.

It would always look somewhat amiss. Down the long table, wearing more gold and silver than a jeweller's store, sat scores of lords, ladies, and those lucky enough to know lords and ladies. They were placed in long lines down the sides, chatting and laughing about the year gone past. Every so often, they'd glance down the table at Cassandra, checking to see if she was still seated.

She always would be. For someone who had earned the fierce reputation of having two chairs empty on either side of her at all times, however, she didn't look the part. People would whisper to newcomers, warning them of the potential horrors that Cassandra could inflict upon the party at any time, and receive confused looks when the newcomer saw nothing but smiles coming from across the table. It contrasted with the servants that served her dinner, who found it hard to place the food on the plate when their entire body was shaking in fear.

They needn't have worried, though. It wasn't the servants she was after.

Well, that's what I was saying, Lord Barson said. Lord Barson was an old, yet jolly man, always keen on using his wealth to bestow mind-bogglingly expensive gifts on those he felt worthy of having them. He was one of the few people on the table that had a waiting list to get a spot on his circle of friends. She must be very lonely, sitting over there on her own.

There's a good reason for that, Lord Sulley said, a man in his forties and the physical and emotional strength of a pessimistic bull. She's nothing but trouble.

Nonsense. Remember when I came down for her birthday? You were going on about throwing a great party for her. We got all her friends around, and she played the princess in her birthday play, and she loved all the gifts she received. And now, on this festival of goodwill, you're leaving her on her tod.

I assure you that goodwill is the least on her mind at the moment. Try not to even approach her, if you can.

But she's so sweet, Lord Barson said. He pointed to the smiling figure of Cassandra, who looked as if she was in serious danger of being bumped off by an angel out of pure envy.

    I promise you,
