    Chapter One: Introduction

Shri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji was born on 15th of April, 1563, at Goindwal Sahib. He was the youngest son of Shri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji Maharaj.

Since his childhood, he was different from his elder brothers, Prithi Chand and Mahadev. He was very obedient and he learned everything very quickly. Arjan Dev Ji learned Gurumukhi script and Gurbani from Baba Budha Ji.

Guru Sahib also learned Persian, Hindi, and Sanskrit languages when he was young. When he was merely a child, he often talked of God. He loved singing holy hymns from Gurbani.

Prithi Chand Ji and Mahadev Ji were Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s two elder brothers. Prithi Chand was a very selfish person and he tried to deceive even his father, but Mahadev Ji mostly remained silent, living a life of ascetic.

Guru Arjan Sahib Ji was very humble and soft spoken. He was a perfect blend of devotion and sacrifice.

When he was only 18 years old, Shri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji Maharaj installed him as the Fifth Nanak, the fifth Guru of the Sikhs.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji was married to Mata Ganga Ji. They had a son, who came to be known as Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.
