    Chapter One: Introduction

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins was first published in 2010. It is a science fiction novel. This book is the last part of the story which begins in the first book The Hunger Games and which was followed by the other part Catching Fire in 2009.

It is the continuation of the story of Katniss Everdeen. When the book was first released, it sold 450,000 copies in the first week. It was beyond the expectations of the publisher. The book generally received positive reviews.

According to the author, she was inspired to write The Hunger Games trilogy by reading the classical account of Theseus and the Minotar, from Greek mythology.

The author describes that there are several similarities between the Roman Empire and the fictional nation of Panem. According to the author the name ‘Panem’ comes from a Latin phrase ‘Panem et Circenses’ which means ‘Bread and Circuses.’

Mockingjay has 27 chapters. The book is divided into three parts with nine chapters in each. The same structure was used by the author in her earlier series The Underland Chronicles.

Since Collins has a playwriting background, this structure of chapter division is not strange in her novels. It is a three-act structure. The author was sure that she was going to write a trilogy before she started writing the first book.

The title Mockingjay comes from the hybrid bird that is included in the novel’s storyline. The bird is an emphatic symbol of hope and rebellion in this novel.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

In the opening chapter of the book we meet Katniss Everdeen, her sister Prim, and her friends Finnick Odair and Gale Howthorne. They are living in the underground District 13. It is a highly structured life, but they seem to have adjusted to this life reluctantly.

District 13 has been leading the rebellion in Panem. They want to make a poster child for the rebellion. Eventually, Katniss consents to be ‘the Mockingjay.’ However, there is condition that President Alma Coin of District 13 must promise immunity to all the past Hunger Games tributes. The past tributes include Peeta Mellark, Katniss’s friend and Annie Cresta, Finnick’s lover. There is a second condition that Katniss will personally kill Panem’s President Snow after he is caught.

Katniss has to work in rebel propaganda films which are called propos. He is unhappy doing all this. She wants to be involved in actual combat. Eventually, she takes part in a tragic battle that involves the bombing of a hospital at District 8.

Peeta happens to be in the captivity of the Capitol and ordered to defame Katniss and the rebels on live television.

He saves the lives of many people by informing the people during on broadcast that the Capitol has plan to bomb District 13, but as a result, the Capitol’s torturers hijack him. In the process of hijacking tracker jacker venom is infused into the body and it develops a deranged resentment
