About this ebook

If you had the opportunity to turn your life completely over to the whims of Fate and let it guide you, would you take it? Rob Jackson has done just that, letting a simple flip of a coin make all his decisions. Having sold his flat, along with everything in it, and left his life in England behind, Rob finds himself on a road trip through the Nevada desert. But as his journey continues, he comes to realise what a strange and cruel mistress Fate can be...

    Thanks for this.

    No problem.

    Say, you’re English, right?

Aw, what gave it away? My pasty complexion?

She smiled a brilliant white smile and I returned it as best I could. I pulled away from the roadside, snatching a glance; she was slim and blonde, with those looks that only hours under the Californian sun can mould.

You mind? she asked, showing me a cigarette.

No, go ahead. Just open a window, though.

She wound the window down and offered me one. I shook my head, breathing in the dry desert air, followed closely by a lungful of her smoke. An old feeling crawled around my stomach.

It’s disgusting how many people don’t smoke anymore, she said and took a drag. "I mean, what happened? It used to be cool and then a bunch of people decided it wasn't and suddenly, anyone who lights up is a fucking pariah. Why even make these fucking things legally available anyway? You can buy ‘em, but you can’t actually smoke ‘em anywhere? What the fuck's up with that?"

I smiled politely, keeping my eyes on the road, mentally steeling myself for a long ride.

God, I'm sorry, she said. I really could've chosen a better icebreaker. You're probably thinking you've picked up some kind of whack job.

Nah, not at all, I said, sighing inwardly in relief. Makes a nice change to hear someone with an opinion.

"Makes a nice change to have someone listen to me."

I’m Rob, I said, raising a hand in greeting. Rob Jackson.

    Callie Joseph.

    Callie? Nice name.

    Thanks.

I watched her sink into the seat, hand hanging out of the window. So what about you? she asked, turning her face to mine; the sun settled against the back of her head, giving her a skewed halo. "What's your story? What brings you all the way from sunny Britain to The Middle Of Nowhere in Buttfuck Nevada?"

I fished into my pocket and took it out, the dulled silver glinting.

Money? she asked, looking at it.

    No. The Coin.

    Oh-kay.

    I sighed.
