About this ebook

An embittered ruler in Sasanian Persia faces a dilemma. He dares not fall in love again, yet he hates to be alone. His solution? Take a new bride each night—and execute her the following dawn! Into the peril runs a young storyteller. She volunteers to be his next bride, and now faces the ultimate test of her skills. Can she weave a tale compelling enough to save lives—including her own?

A T Beaune’s modern retelling brings the Shahrazad legend to life for new audiences. Ideally suited to oral presentation and recently dramatised in ICRT radio broadcast, the short story appears here in its original form and in a version for four readers. Along the way it illuminates many works the classic tale has inspired, including the dazzling orchestral showpiece by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
