    Introduction

    These characters were created in a workshop given by author Carolyn Wheat in Saratoga Springs, NY in 1988. She told us to think of the most interesting person we had met recently, move them into unfamiliar circumstances, and build a story around them.

    I had recently done some volunteer library work at a local mental hospital. One of the patients I met there was the blueprint for Jill Abercrombie. The patient, who must remain nameless, was both psychic and an empath, as Jill Abercrombie is. All the staff were warned never to touch her. When she came to the library, she would always want to know who had read a book last, before picking it up. There are some very sick people in here, she told me. I can’t handle anything they have touched.

    She had been in an institution from the age of four, and remained in one until she died in 1990. Her diagnosis was Neurasthenia.

    I found ‘the real Jill,’ and her undeniable psychic abilities, fascinating. I put her in different circumstances by moving her back to a time when less was known about mental illness. I made her younger, gave her wealthy parents who could afford to care for her at home, and kept her carefully away from society. And I gave her a brother who cared.
