    CHAPTER ONE: HISTORY

Various forms of games that resemble association football (soccer) were played in ancient Greece and Rome. In China during the Han dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD) a game developed that was very similar to soccer today, in which players were prohibited from touching the ball with their hands. In the ancient Americas, natives before Columbus also developed a game of this kind.

However, association football as we now know it is primarily a modern creation that got its start in England. It was termed 'Association Football' in 1863 to distinguish it from Rugby and other forms of football then being played. The word 'soccer' was a shortening of the word 'Association,' with an 'er' placed on the end. In most languages however, the game is simply called 'football.'

Various organizations in England began forming rules for the game, starting in 1848. Clubs were formed and teams began playing each other regularly in England. By the turn of the century the game had spread to many parts of the world, and had become quite popular. In 1904 the 'International Federation of Association Football' was formed in Paris. This name in French was Federation Internationale de Football Association, leading to the acronym 'FIFA.' This is still the organization in charge of the world cup today.

The first international association football match was played in 1872 between Scotland and England. By 1900 the game had become popular enough that it was played in the Olympics as a demonstration sport. FIFA tried to organize an international tournament outside of the Olympics in 1906, but without success. In the 1908 Olympics, soccer was an official game in the competition, with amateur players only. Great Britain won the gold medal that year, and again in the 1912 Olympics. In 1909 an international association football tournament was held in Turin, organized by Sir Thomas Lipton. However, the competition was not between national teams, but rather between clubs from different nations. Although England officially refused to participate, the unofficial team from West Auckland, England won the tournament against clubs from Italy, Germany and Switzerland.

By 1914 FIFA had recognized the Olympics as the national soccer playoffs, and helped organize the Olympic soccer games. The Olympic gold in soccer was won by Belgium in 1920, and by Uruguay in 1924 and again in 1928. Finally, FIFA organized its own independent tournament to occur in 1930 in Uruguay, and the world cup was born.

The world cup in Russia in 2018 will be the twenty-first cup tournament. No tournament was held in 1942 and 1946 because of the Second World War,
