The Hollow Earth Special Forces Team has had another battle with the Insectoids, intelligent humanoid insects that are capable of passing through solid rock. The President is badly wounded and only Smergey is left to defend him.

A traitor is in the midst of the team and only Smergey knows who it is, but he and the President are cut off from the main team, lost in the depths of the earth.

Miles holds up his left arm for a halt and everyone behind him stops, waiting for what's next.

Some of the Hollow Earth Special Forces take the break to examine their weapons, checking the rounds, wiping off dust and grime. Others just break out packs of chewing gum, which cause others about them to scramble. Chewing gum is like candy in the new age of man, rare and very expensive. So the troops with the gum are treated like royalty by those without.

Miles and the President turn around to watch the orderly chaos behind them and exchange weary glances. Miles glances at his wristwatch, whose hands glow in the semi-dark of the corridor, which is lit here and there by the strange glowing patches of moss that hang from the ceiling and cling to the walls periodically.

They're like children scrambling about on the playground on recess time. The President comments.

You miss your children, don't you, Jim?

The President sighs wearily. With every single ounce of my being. He looks about to cry, but sucks it up as best he can and wipes at his eyes, causing black streaks to form about them from the sooty walls he touches sometimes.

He looks at his hands. Charcoal. Who would have thought we'd find such wealth this deep down?

    Well... Miles starts.

Aaron steps up and grins. One hundred and twenty miles and counting, Mister President, Sir. He adds when Miles glances at him.

You'd think if someone was going to build a tunnel to the center of the earth, the least they could do is make it straight. Miles gripes.

Aaron claps a hand on his shoulder. General, you know better. We're not dealing with a modern civilization here. Probably some kind of predawn humans who have a more than average intelligence and mechanical ability.

What about those Insectoids? The President asks sharply. Do those look like predawn humans to you?

Miles puts a hand on the President's arm. "Lighten up, Jim; he's just trying to be friendly.
