This story of the famous Great Lakes schooner Nancy has been a labour of love both in the research and the telling. Few such vessels have captured the imagination of students of Canadian history. Among the treasured vessels of our past, the Nancy ranks alongside Cabot’s Mathew, Cartier’s Hermione, LaSalle’s Griffon, the HBC’s Beaver and Larsen’s St. Roch. The Nancy’s story is particularly fabled because of her cross-border escapades during the War of 1812, when her risky voyages to the southwest shore of Lake Erie helped sustain the British Imperial campaign at Sandusky and the River Raisin, one of the most vicious fights of the conflict. Then, too, her fiery end, in battle against vessels of the United States Navy in 1814 on the Nottawasaga River, marks another important chapter in that remarkable struggle for control of the inland seas.
In recounting the legendary voyages of the Nancy and her epic final hours I have also sought to tell the story of her two great masters, Alexander Mackintosh and Miller Worsley. The former was a merchant captain; the latter, a British naval officer. Both of them fought patriotically for the British Imperial side and were, in their separate ways, models of the zeal, determination and heroic character that were exhibited in these enchanting but ruthless days of fighting sail. Their names live on, albeit somewhat in the shadow of Nancy’s illustrious glory. But we must remember that ships are instruments of commerce or war, and historical credit is due to those who sail them and provide leadership, technical knowledge, and the ability to command. Also, serving under their command were skilled men. The crews that worked the Nancy deserve greater credit than the historical record gives them. However, as is the case with so many other gallant figures, the records of their story have been lost to time. What little remains of our knowledge of these men has been carefully preserved in these pages. With this in mind, I have taken care to tell more about Mackintosh and Worsley than previous accounts have given. They are, in a way, heroes of the piece: figures against a horizon, then engulfed in the flames of combat. It is a world we have lost, but almost two hundred years later it has a romance and a wonder that calls out for the telling.
This book extends the Nancy story as analyzed in Fighting Sail on Lake Huron and Georgian Bay: The War of 1812 and Its Aftermath (Naval Institute Press and Vanwell Publishing, 2002). It examines details and aspects of this freshwater war that have not previously been looked at. That war, as told through a ship’s life, has its own charm as well as its own dynamic. In latter years, as official historian of Canada’s most treasured man-of-war, HMCS Haida, I have learned (even more so than in my days as a sailor and serviceman) that the material of war — in this case a Tribal-class destroyer, now a Parks Canada and Canadian Historical Site in Hamilton, Ontario — becomes the symbol for those who used such a weapons platform in wartime. The same is true of the Nancy. The era is different, of course, but the same principle applies. We still have the charred bones of the Nancy, saved for posterity by my zealous precursor, the journalist C.J.H. Snider, at the museum at Wasaga Beach, Ontario. These ships cry out their stories to us from across the generations. They are a reminder, as I say, of a world now lost; even so, they are an enchanting monument to past ages of maritime endeavour and the Price of Admiralty.
No account of the trial and tragic end of the Nancy would be complete without the story of how Worsley avenged the loss of the schooner. That chapter is a saga of derring-do and cunning the likes of which were characteristic of its time, and it has not lost anything in the retelling. For with Worsley’s capture of the U.S. Navy’s Tigress and Scorpion, the tide of the war on Lake Huron turned — boosting the fortunes of the Royal Navy, various army units, the North West Company, and Indian allies considerably. What would have happened had another year’s campaigning occurred is not difficult to guess. But just as fortune had favoured the brave, so did urgent diplomacy bring peace to the lakeland frontier and borderlands, so that Worsley’s prizes remained British naval property and central to British strategy on the Great Lakes in the immediate post-war period, the last years of fighting sail.

Introduction
The War of 1812 occupies a special place in the histories of both Canada and the United States. It was in many respects the beginning of national consolidation on both sides. Both Canadians and Americans exited the war with a fresh and fertile ground on which to sow their national identities. The war also allowed Great Britain and the United States to settle their formal boundaries west of the Continental Divide. This gives the War of 1812 the honour of not only being the war that defined two nations psychologically, but physically as well. Despite this remarkable place in the history of North America, the War of 1812 is all but forgotten. In recent years, only a handful of historians in either Canada or the United States have dabbled in it, and even fewer have made it their specialty. In Great Britain, the war goes largely unnoticed.
The story of the Nancy, like the War of 1812 itself, is vital and yet forgotten. Following the War of 1812 the story of the schooner was largely lost, or simply retold superficially as parts of larger histories. It was not until the twentieth century, when Colonel E.A. Cruikshank published a short article in the Ontario Historical Review, that a more complete story was brought to light. C.H.J. Snider, a journalist from Toronto, crafted the fullest history of the Nancy in 1913 with In the Wake of the Eighteen-Twelvers. Snider later published Leaves from the War Log of the Nancy, a transcription of the few months of the Nancy’s log that have survived history. Not until the publication of my Fighting Sail on Lake Huron and Georgian Bay: The War of 1812 and Its Aftermath was the Nancy placed in its historical context. What remains now is to tell the story as it ought to be told, as an adventure of the Nancy and her gallant little band of seamen amid the broader dangers of the War of 1812.
The Nancy’s war took place on one of the most strategic battlegrounds of the War of 1812. The Northwest, or Old Northwest
as American textbooks term it, was defined as that area comprising what is now western and northern Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. From the outset of the War of 1812 the Northwest was a crucial battleground. Economically vital to the British, politically indispensable to the Americans, and the homeland of dozens of Native nations, the Northwest became a campaign ground that taxed the resources, manpower and strategic thought of all sides of the conflict. The war for the Northwest, however, was not simply a set-piece battlefield where soldiers marched and died like men on a chessboard. It was, above all else, a supply war. It was a war where disease and weather could cripple an army and where food was scarce and communications slow. It was a war where little schooners like the Nancy represented the difference between victory and defeat.
To tell the story of the Nancy, it is essential that the story of the war in the Northwest be told. That being said, this is not meant to be a campaign history. Events will move quickly and the emphasis will return to the little schooner as often as history allows. It should be borne in mind, however, that everything the Nancy encountered was impacted by the wider world around her.

The Old Northwest
On 1 July 1812, Alexander Mackintosh looked with pride on his little schooner, for she was designed and built for speed, maneuverability, and durability — perfect for Great Lakes waters. Nancy lay quietly at the Mackintosh family wharf at this western rim of the Upper Canada peninsula, hard by the waterway that separated British from American territory. Her sails were neatly furled and tucked under her yardarms. She was a handsome, if somewhat aging, vessel. At twenty-five years of age, Alexander was only two years older than his schooner. The Nancy had been built across the river in Detroit by Forsyth, Richardson & Co., date of completion 24 December 1789. Her two raked masts were rigged both for square topsails and fore-and-aft mainsails. She measured eighty feet long and twenty-two feet wide, and was made of the sturdiest white oak and cedar. A graceful figurehead of a fashionably dressed lady, complete with a hat and feather, pointed the way at Nancy’s bow. While her exterior was sturdy, if a little worn, inside Mackintosh’s cabin was spacious and comfortable, with large stern windows allowing a flood of light. More importantly, her hold was a cavernous eight feet deep, capable of carrying 350 barrels of cargo.¹ For the kind of protection the uncertain and sometimes dangerous fur trade demanded, Mackintosh had two small brass cannon mounted on her deck.
The Nancy was part of a vast fur-trading network managed by Angus Mackintosh, Alexander’s father. Angus was one of the powerful North West Company’s agents in the Detroit area.² Born in 1755 into the family of McIntosh clan chieftainship, Angus had left Scotland in his youth. By 1783 he had settled near Detroit and married into a local French family. There, his business and his family prospered. When Detroit was passed to the Americans by the 1783 treaty, Angus moved his family to the British side of the river, where he built a large two-storey house, a warehouse, a wharf and a store where he could sell the goods he shipped around the lakes. He called the complex Moy, after his family’s ancestral home in Scotland. He and his wife had fourteen children — including ten daughters and four sons. Alexander was the second-oldest.³
