Tamed and Mated #2
The sun was just starting to rise over the horizon as I made my way back to the mountains, back home. I spread my wings as soon as I could, enjoying the momentary freedom.
A guard looked up at me as I crossed into our living area, and then he scrambled from his position. Running to tell my mate to be, I guessed. Of course, he didn't know, couldn't know, that I was already mated. I'd screwed up, and it was too late to take it all back.
Unwilling to land and head to my family's cave immediately, I circled in the air. The village was sleeping below. Caves lay silent, and hot springs abandoned. My gaze stuck to the mount of the volcano in the middle of our village. I'd loved that place as a child. When I thought of home, this was what came to mind. Playing with the hot lava as a hatchling, racing through the mountains, eating almost charred meat with my family.
I couldn't throw all this away. This was where I belonged. Not the forest, not anywhere else.
Reaching my parent's cave, I landed on the stony ground and folded my wings behind my back.
I took a few steps into the cool shade before someone came dashing out of the black hole and almost knocked me over.
Xyla!
I threw my arms around my little sister. Although I'd only been gone for two days, it felt like I hadn't seen her in forever.
While with Jace, I never once thought about how worried my family had to be. It had totally slipped my mind. Thinking of Jace, the curves of my lips turned downward. Thankfully, Xyla had her face buried in my chest and couldn't see.
You came back! I knew you would!
she said, although she didn't look as if she'd been that certain. Kilan said you might not.
I shook my head. Kilan was our big brother. He already had a cave of his own where he lived with his mate. Kilan was a warrior, and had never held much appreciation for me. Of course I came back,
I told my sister. Maybe not for Kilan, but I would always come back for her. Let's go inside.
Taking her by the hand, I walked into the cave where Castor had tried to rape me just days before.
Selem!
