About this ebook
War comes for us. The Altaican Rakshasa face the Rewa, and the seclusion of our underground home in the Brindabella is not enough to keep the darkness at bay. The storm gathers all around us; the shadow of war, its fingers long, reaches into our lives.
It is a war we know we cannot win.
The conflagration, a raging fire, looms over my world. It is building, coming, and the seeds of this terrible thing are already in motion. The shadowy underworld of the Rakshasa churns as Shade takes control of the Rewa, leading them against us.
Now it is Hailstone and I, but things are more complicated than they seem...

Prologue
War
We had quarter of an hour to prepare for war.
This wasn’t the war between nations, fought with tanks and bombs and aircraft. This was to be war between two tiny covens, two tiny groups of Rakshasa. There were less than twenty of us, all told, with the balance favouring our enemies. It was a tiny war, fought in secret from the rest of the world. Canberra and the rest of the country would never know, at least if we did it right.
There wasn’t a lot we could do in that time. Asena rallied everyone to us, recalling Vriko and Susi from the borders. A quick discussion was had regarding securing the Garden of Shadow against possible intruders, which boiled down to locking the doors and hoping they couldn’t find another way in without destroying the place.
I was mainly worried about Ishan. They had called Asena to let her know what was happening; Shade had taken over, and he and Hailstone were on their way here. More worrying, they were wounded. How badly I didn’t know.
It was with a great amount of trepidation, hardened by anger, that I stood by the mouth of the cave that lead to the Garden of Shadow, watching two figures make their way into the valley that lead to the mountainside and begin to climb. Faster than any human but slower than I’d ever seen either of them move. I wanted to go to them, but I knew that leaving the mouth of the cave unguarded could be a disaster.
Hailstone and Ishan made their way up the hill. The wind was blowing my way. I could smell blood. The strength of the scent made me recoil, but I forced myself to calm down. I was only recently changed. A human’s sense of smell was nothing compared to a Rakshasa’s. It might not be so bad.
Although, Asena had warned me that Shade was now in control of the Rewa. Shade the vicious and bloodthirsty one, eager for war, eager for revenge for slights that had occurred before I’d even known of the Rakshasa.
What had Shade done to Ishan? I felt anger boil up inside me. If she had wounded him, I would repay that pain a hundred times over.
Come on, I silently pleaded to Ishan and Hailstone. I needed them here. Especially Ishan. I couldn’t tell if it was him who was bleeding or not, but my imagination painted terrible images in my head. I’d seen him wounded before, the scars were still recent. His body could only take so much.
He made it and fell into my arms. I held him as tightly as I could, gripping him and pressing his body against me, holding him. He was bleeding from his side,
