The loveliest faces are to be seen by moonlight, when one sees half with the eye and half with the fancy.

    Prologue

    Tuesday

The rain came down with a gentle urgency that, even this far into the cave, wouldn’t let me sleep. I was grateful for it—my body was exhausted, but I needed to be awake. Eventually I surrendered to the wind’s incessant howling and dragged myself out of bed, limping down the limestone cavern that was the Garden of Shadow, the home of the Rakshasa, until the first light of the outside stung my eyes and I could see the angled grey wall of rain pouring down outside. The setting sun cast its light straight into the cave mouth as I watched the water pour down on the southern Australian landscape, rubbing at my bandaged side to soothe the itch that came with deep wounds slowly healing.

I needed to sleep to heal where I’d been shot, but I couldn’t crawl back to bed even if the rain eased up because today was Tuesday. Tuesday was the day Ishan could visit.

The rain came down in sheets as the sun set behind the cave, the mountain and trees at the top casting a shadow like a row of jagged teeth biting down on its neighbour, a visage of the world cloaked in a grey shroud.

My sharp eyes saw movement in the valley, a lone figure moving up the mountainside, and I felt a surge in my heart. I knew who it was, even though I hadn’t seen his face, and my wound felt less painful, the burdens on my mind much lighter.

Patience was never my strong suit, one of the few things that had not changed when I had discovered what I was and my Rakshasa bloodline had awoken. Ishan’s slow progress up the hill tested every fibre of my being; I wanted to run out into the rain to grab him, hold him and never let go, but Asena had told me I wasn’t supposed to get my injury wet and that I wasn’t supposed to run.

He drew closer and I saw he was wearing a yellow raincoat, his arms wrapped around himself. This was good. He, too, had been injured and was slow to heal; I doubted very much that whoever tended wounds in the Rewa camp would give him different advice.

Nice day for a stroll, I called out, finding it impossible to keep they joy out of my tone. I was smiling so wide it hurt.

Oh, I wouldn’t say that, said Ishan, stepping under the overhang of the cave’s mouth and pulling back the bright yellow hood of his raincoat, it’s a little humid out.

A little. I reached forward, sliding my hands under his raincoat, sliding my arms around his
