    Chapter 1

Cassie could not move.  She felt as though she was being held down by a ton of bricks.  Her whole body hurt and her mind played tricks.  She saw someone was trying to open the car door. He was dressed all in black; even his face was covered in black.  She could have sworn she was looking at a ninja.  She knew she wasn’t seeing clearly.  There were no ninjas around.  She felt something wet run down her forehead and in her eyes, then down her face and neck.  Quickly, she closed her eyes as the dizziness took over.

When she came to a short time later, she felt herself being lifted up.  She heard voices around her and knew they were putting her in an emergency vehicle.  Her mind still confused, she tried again to open her eyes.

Lay still and try not to move.  We’ll be at the hospital in twenty minutes.  I need to insert an IV in your arm, a voice beside her said.

Cassie remembered something very important and tried to speak, Pregnant... the baby... is the baby ok?

You’re pregnant?  We won’t know about the baby until we get you to emergency.  Stay calm, the voice spoke.

Cassie knew there was something else important she needed to say or ask, but before she could, blackness took over.

When she came to again, she was in a white room and hooked up to machines.  Her mind still was not functioning properly.  As she tried to think of a reason for her being there, she couldn’t remember anything except the doctor appointment she had earlier.

Adam, her brother-in-law, and Chrissy, her sister, took Cassie to the doctor, who confirmed Cassie’s pregnancy.  She was approximately twelve weeks pregnant.  What that meant was that she was going to be Aunt Cassie.

After almost ten years of trying to get pregnant, her sister Chrissy found out she could not conceive due to medical problems.  Cassie saw how devastated both Adam and Chrissy were, so after months of agonizing over the decision, Cassie volunteered to be their surrogate.  The discussions went back and forth for some time, but finally it was decided. After three difficult and painful treatments, Cassie now carried her sister’s baby.

Her thoughts went to the baby she carried, and she prayed that the baby was alright.  She knew it would almost destroy her sister and Adam if anything went wrong with this pregnancy.

The emergency room doctor walked into the room with her medical chart in his hands.

Miss Bradley, I’m Doctor Wayne.  I know you’re in pain, and after we run some tests, we’ll be better equipped in knowing what we can prescribe.  We’ve stitched the gash on the top of your head.  You now have twelve stitches there and another seven in your right leg.  The nurses will be here to take you down for a scan of your head, and you will also be getting an ultrasound done, as I understand you are pregnant.  Do you have any questions at this time?

I can’t remember what happened, but I remember that I am pregnant and I am worried about the baby, Cassie said very weakly.

We’ll do the ultrasound first so we’ll know if your baby is in distress.  Then we’ll take you for a CAT scan, the doctor replied.

Cassie tried to reply but two nurses entered the room.  They pushed a machine toward Cassie’s bed, and proceeded to start the ultrasound.  Cassie knew the baby was tiny and hoped the test would show that the baby was well protected and would be fine.  Cassie felt wetness between her legs and hoped she wasn’t losing the baby.  She was reassured when the nurses did a thorough check and told her she was spotting a little, but due to the very small amount of blood, she wasn’t miscarrying.

After the ultrasound, the nurse told her that everything so far looked good, but she would have to stay off her feet and stay put in the hospital until the slight bleeding stopped.

Next, she was taken down for the CAT scan and afterwards was brought back to her room.  Apparently the results of her tests would be examined by Doctor Wayne, and he would go over them with her later.

Her head throbbed and dizziness took over after being transferred back to her bed.  She couldn’t know how long she was out, but when she opened her eyes again, she saw the familiar face of Drake Holten, Adam’s best friend and FBI partner.  Drake and Adam had been partners for almost eight years.

Cassie and Drake had dated a couple of times but nothing came of it.  She never knew if it was due to her long hours at the hospital or his long hours on the job.  She thought possibly it was just the wrong time for both of them. However, they still saw each other
