    TRAPPED IN TUNICA

    Elizabeth Sherry

    Chapter 1

    Present day

Joy awakened to darkness.  Her head pounded with pain.  She tried to sit up and when she could, she reached up and felt the lump at the back of her skull.  She vaguely remembered that something or someone hit the back of her head after the lights went out at the hotel.  She saw nothing in the dark and as she tried to stand, dizziness overtook her and she sat back down.  Is anyone here?  Help!  Someone, please Help!  She called out but all was quiet.

The last thing she remembered was her walk down the hallway outside of her room.  Both her sisters, Beth and Lynn went down a few minutes before her, but she wanted to give Michael a call first.  Michael was her boyfriend in Colorado.  It seemed as soon as she entered the hallway the lights went out and before she knew what had happened, something or someone hit her on the back of her head.

The thought crossed her mind that she might still be in the hallway outside her room.  Therefore, she felt around for a door but only touched air.  Crawling to the left, she still did not find a door or anything else within reach.  She then crawled to the right and found something that drew a terrified scream from her lips.  What she felt was a leg....  A very stiff, cold leg.

Joy did not stop screaming.  She felt her whole body shaking.  She was afraid, so very afraid.  She tried to pull herself together knowing she needed to calm down.  She needed to think clearly, but did not see that happening anytime soon.

After she took a few deep breaths, her thoughts were clearer and her brain told her to check the person lying next to her.  Knowing the leg of the person in the room with her was cold; she assumed earlier that the person was dead.  Thinking more clearly now, she knew she, herself felt very cold.  This place was very cold.

Drawing on her courage, Joy reached out and felt the person, only this time she ran her hands up the person’s side until she came to the neck.  Feeling for a pulse, she was surprised that she did feel a pulse.  Another thing she discovered was that the body she was examining was that of a woman.

With her fingers still pressed to the woman’s throat, Joy heard a low moaning.  The woman must be waking up.

Can you hear me?  Are you badly hurt?  Joy asked the stranger lying on the floor.

For a few moments, all Joy could hear was more moaning, but then the woman answered in a whisper.

My head hurts like a building fell on top of me.  Where am I and who are you?

Can you sit up?  My name is Joy.  I came to in this place after someone or something slammed into my head, Joy informed the woman.

Was it only yesterday that she and her two sisters drove down to Tunica from Memphis?  Her sisters, Lynn and Beth were spending a week in Memphis and all three wanted to see Tunica and have some fun playing slot machines for the next two days.

Joy, Lynn and Beth got together twice a year for what they all called their sisters’ weeks.  They usually have a lot of fun and of course, lots of silly laughter.  Things were not so fun right now and the last thing Joy felt like doing at this time was laugh.

It’s so dark here.  Just before something hit me on top of the head, the lights went out.  I guess they haven’t come back on yet, Joy said.

Before the woman could comment on the darkness, Joy heard what sounded like someone unlocking a door.  Her scream caught in her throat.  Could it be someone here to help or could it be the person or persons who put her here?

Is anyone in here?  Jason, shine your flashlight around.

Joy now knew there were at least two people at the door.  She still kept quiet.  She vaguely could make out a man in what looked like a security guard coat and another in a business suit.

The light blinded her for a brief moment before the two men spoke again.  Are you two ladies alright?  How did you get in here?  Someone reported hearing screams from this area.  Otherwise, we would never have checked this room for day, the man in the hotel suit said.

Now the security guard was bending down to help the other woman stand.  He looked at Joy, and asked, Can you stand?  Do you need help?

Joy was getting to her feet, but felt the room move and she moved with it.  If the hotel employee had not grabbed her, she would have fallen back down.

Jason, let head of security know we need paramedics.  Have them meet us in my office.

Joy heard Jason on his phone, and as she was lead out of the room, she saw Jason and the hotel employee more clearly.  She also saw the blood on the other woman’s blouse and head and had to steel herself from passing out.

    Chapter 2

    Twenty-Four Hours Before

Beth, Joy, and Lynn had a wonderful time in Memphis.  This was their Sisters Week as the three women called the two times per year that the three of them join for fun, laughs and sometimes crafts.

Beth was the oldest sister, with Joy being the middle sister.  She was six years younger than Beth, and Lynn was the youngest of the three.  The three got along great and had such fun together.  Since they were in their late twenties and early thirties, they knew it would not
