He never brings me flowers... - Cora Buhlert

    He never brings me flowers

    pinstripe

He never brings me flowers, Anna thought, as she put away the second plate and blew out the candles on the table. No need for romantic lighting when the dinner was only for one.

Ted had called her five minutes ago to say that he would be late — as usual. Anna should probably feel flattered that he had bothered to call at all. Most of the time he didn’t.

Ted worked long hours. He had to, he said. He couldn’t just go home at five o’clock like other people. After all, he made a lot of money. Much more than other people. So naturally he had to work harder. Harder and longer. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices, he said. I’m doing it all for us, baby, he said.

But Anna didn’t care. Not about the job, not about Ted’s career, not about the money. They didn’t need so much money and Anna didn’t want it, either. She wanted no more than what other people had. A decent job and a nice apartment and enough money for a comfortable life.

And those immaterial things that all the money in the world couldn’t buy. Someone who loved her
