Author’s Introduction
Strategic Air Command (SAC) headquarters is located at Offutt Air Force base, not far from where I live in Omaha, Nebraska. It is off limits to the public, because it is from SAC that the mighty warplanes carrying Hydrogen Bombs (H-Bombs) fly, the warplanes that by constantly threatening our enemies. with immediate destruction, keep the uneasy cold war peace. Tight security is provided for America’s most important strategic military deterrent, and security is never relaxed. Being a member of the public, SAC is never open a to me, so I have never been to the SAC headquarters, and I never will be.
Not far from SAC headquarters, there is a SAC Museum. On Armed Forces Day the public is invited in, and. on such an occasion I visited the Museum. While strolling along, looking in awe at the giant bombers and marveling at their size, all at once I came upon a different exhibit. It was a simple box, rectangular, about the size of a coffin, and painted battleship gray. The box sat on two sturdy saw horse type supports, and was roped off to keep the public away from it. In front was a small white sign that said in capital black letters H-BOMB.
When I saw this thing of mass destruction, right there in front of me, I felt fear, and immediately thought, it can’t be real.
Then came the thoughts why not?
and maybe it is real?
Reluctantly I stepped closer and inspected the box. It was featureless. There was no clue as to whether or not it contained The Bomb. Maybe it did. Maybe it did not. And maybe it did. They certainly had plenty of bombs, and the warplanes were authentic. Probably The Bomb was too.
I stood there, looking at The Bomb right in front of me. No one was around, there was no guard in sight, and if I dared to, I could duck under the protective ropes and actually touch the thing. However, I dared not do anything like that. I had far too much respect for it, and too much fear for what is was, for what it might do, to dare such a thing. Just what if, what if, it went off? For a person who believed the killing of just one person was a terrible sin, the thought of killing many thousands, as well as I, was so horrendous as to be simply inconceivable. Therefore, I just stood there staring at it. Thoughts about that box and what it contained came into my mind unbidden, and swirled round and round.
Finally, I left the museum, but I could not leave the box behind me. I kept thinking and thinking about it. Certain questions arose in my mind concerning it. I asked, what is it, why was it made, what does
