Chess Theory - Phillip Duke
Author’s Foreword
––––––––
Chess theory is so large that it cannot all be presented in just one book. This book presents the most important Chess theory, and by most important I mean most fundamental to Chess, and most helpful for Chess players. Chess theory is an interesting subject in it self, and knowing and applying Chess theory wins Chess games.
The Author’s Foreword, and Introduction to Chess, are followed by eight chapters. Chapter 1 is titled The Chess Board, Chapter 2 The Chess Pieces, Chapter 3 The Three Elements of Chess Play, Chapter 4 The Two Different Chess Abilities, Chapter 5 Winning At Chess, Chapter 6 Chess Sayings, Chapter 7 The Evolution of Chess, and Chapter 8 A Brief Chess Biography, followed by The Ten Greatest Chess Players Of All Time (Illustrated). The average Chess player will probably not be familiar with at least some of the content, the new player probably will not be familiar with most of it.
There are many different Rules in Chess regarding move selection and just what move to select, but there is one Chess Rule that is always valid, and it is this: Move according to the demands of the position.
The position on the board dictates the move, and there are no exceptions to this rule, which supersedes all others. Demands of the position
means what is most helpful toward winning the Chess game, and also toward not losing it.

Introduction to Chess
––––––––
Chess is the world’s most popular board game, more has been written about it, than for all other board games combined. It has been said, Chess is too artistic to be a science, and too scientific to be an art.
Chess can be defined as a competitive, creative and strategic endeavor/game, with two sides (called White and Black) in conflict, moving 16 Chess pieces of six different kinds, on a board with 64 alternating light and dark squares. Players move consecutively, each kind of piece moves differently, and captured pieces are removed from the board. The game is won by capturing the enemy King.
Chess pieces have the medieval names of King, Queen, Bishop, Knight (on horseback), Rook (castle) and Pawn; Chess can be considered a medieval war game, won by capturing the opponent’s King. Since the King is head of both Church and State, his capture decisively ends the conflict. If there is no decision, the game ends in a draw.
Chess ability does not necessarily correlate with success at war. Napoleon Bonaparte, considered to be one of the greatest generals of all time, was fond of Chess, but he was a mediocre player.
.Chess Rules are established in the United States by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), and internationally by the Federacion International Des Echecs (FIDE) with headquarters in Switzerland.. USCF and FIDE rules are not all identical, and this book’s content is consistent with USCF rules and policy. The USCF and FIDE regulate rated tournaments, whose results establish Chess ratings, and titles. The USCF has an informative monthly publication called Chess Life,
and the USCF can be contacted on the Internet at USCF.com.
