Under the Moons of Gehenna - D.R. Collins
Chapter One - Lord of the Southern Plains
Crow watched with cold eyes as the small pack of Longheads looked over their booty. He was grateful he had missed their little party with the settler and his family. The foolish napoo had led them to slaughter, and there was nothing left now but his meager belongings and the horses.
The lure of easy money had drawn a lot of suckers out of the settlements and into trouble lately. A rumor had spread about people getting rich digging for silver out in the badlands. The only problem was this part of Gehenna, or Algatha, as the natives called it, belonged to the Vulgaran. A few changeling tribes occasionally tried to scratch out a piece of the land for themselves, but they usually didn't last long here. This was Vulgaran territory, and they were bad news.
Crow watched the new arrival ride out with his family in tow. His wife had kept her head down as if she didn't want to upset her husband by looking too desperately at one of the Frontier Rangers. Crow would have let it drop at that, but the bloody fool's daughter looked out the back of the wagon and gave him a big smile. She waved at him with an innocence that he had not seen in a long time.
Ordinarily, he would have just gotten drunk and forgot about it, but he couldn't get that little girl's smile out of his mind. His conscience badgered him for a few days until he set out on the trail after them. So, now he was out here on his own and three days ride from the nearest fort.
He had just decided to slip away from this awful scene and start making his way back to a safer part of the world when one of the horses started acting funny. Horses, as a rule, don't like the Vulgaran, but this one had actually come around the side of the wagon like it wanted to hide from them. It was then he noticed the white stripes that covered the legs of the animal. There was only one kind of horse that carried those stripes on Gehenna. Crow's stomach sank as he realized this stupid napoo had somehow gotten his hands on a Breed horse.
These animals were rare and highly valued. Usually, the bloody Palliks keep them all to themselves, although he had heard of a few Rangers who rode them. The natives claim they are all linked by bloodline to some mythic animal ridden by one of their gods. Crow didn't believe a word of it, but he did know the Breed horses could outrun anything from Earth. It was said they would run all day if you asked them to, but he didn't know how you would go about asking a horse to do something, even ones as smart as these are supposed to be.
He had always wanted a Breed horse. Now, here's one that will end up in the cook pots of these dirty Longheads. A lot of the Vulgaran tribes kept horses but not this group. Joey Littlebear had reckoned it was because they had faces that looked so much like them. Joey was full of bull most of the time, but he was right about that. The Longhead tribe had huge noggins that ended in a long snout full of teeth and wore their hair in a style that looked a lot like a horse's mane.
Crow looked around at the box canyon the settler had driven into. It had plenty of shady spots where the Vulgaran could wait out the hot sun. They preferred to operate at night, but that wouldn't stop them from killing you if you ran across them during the day. The settler had picked a bad spot to bring his family.
Crow watched the Longheads arguing. It looked like they were fighting over some kind of blue cloth. He sighed as he remembered the stupid napoo's wife had been wearing a pretty blue dress. He knew they would get around to a head count of the horses soon. He shook his head and checked his rifle. He didn't want to start trouble in the middle of the badlands, but he couldn't let these bastards get away with this. Besides, he would never have a better chance to get a Breed horse.
He sighed again and took aim at the biggest one of them. He only had five silver rounds, and there were eight of them, so he would have to make them count. His first shot caught a Longhead right in the middle of his horse-like face. He dropped without a sound. Of course, Crow's old Enfield 4 rifle had a loud enough report to send the Vulgaran scattering for cover. He was too far away for them to see him in the daylight, so he took his time and flanked them using the ridge line for cover.
The Vulgaran were vicious not stupid, so they split up and began making their way out of the little canyon where the settler had made his last stand. Crow dropped another one, but missed once also. This got them talking among
