    About the Author

    40 Days of Prayer – Week 1

    Acts 1:1-13

    I. Intro

    A. Have you ever noticed how often the period of 40 Days shows up in the Bible?

    1. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights during the flood where only Noah and his family survived.

    2. Moses was on the mountain 40 days twice with God.

    3. The Israelite spies spent 40 days going through the Promised Land. And the Israelites spent 40 years in the wilderness, one year for each day.

    4. Goliath challenged the Israelites 40 days before David took him out.

    5. Elijah spent 40 days in the desert after calling down the fire of God.

    6. The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness for 40 days after His baptism.

    7. After His resurrection, Jesus was on earth 40 days before He ascended into heaven.

    B. Throughout the Bible, we see things of significance happen in 40 day periods.

    1. God seems to use 40 day periods to prepare His people for what's next.

    2. Many times the 40 Day experience comes out of tough situations.

    3. And many times the 40 Day experience is tough in itself.

    4. But God always used these 40 Day periods to prepare His people for what's next.

    5. The 40 Days was not an end to itself.

    6. The 40 Days was always a time to prepare for even greater things to follow.

II. There's a 40 Day experience that stands out to me in Acts.

    A. It's mentioned in the first few verses of that book.

    1. READ ACTS 1:1-13.

    2. Before what we've read took place, there were a few big events.

    3. Jesus had been crucified on the cross.

    4. And then, three days later Jesus was resurrected.

    5. He emerged out of the grave alive!

    B. And then these verses we've read tell us about the last 40 Days Jesus spent on earth.

    1. He appeared to them and proved to them He was alive.

    2. Jesus spent His last 40 days giving His apostles further instructions.

    3. He told them they would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

    4. He told them they would be His witnesses.

    5. He let them know that Him leaving was not the end
