Chapter 1 - Mary
While it was dark, Mary grew tired of the fiery scenes of death and woe just outside her window. She closed her eyes and leaned the car seat backward, trying to erase the horror.
She attempted to remove the events of the day. She wanted to believe that tomorrow she would go to work like any other day. In a few hours she would walk by Celeste, who would invite her to another girl’s night out. She hoped that all would be well. But the audible crashes and booms shook her out of this irrational hope.
She wondered what would have happened if she had listened to Dexter when he told her to leave earlier. Maybe she would be sitting in Dexter’s dining room with Celeste sipping on wine and watching the news until this zombie mess was cleared up in a week or so. But no, she was about 30 miles south of the goal and everybody she had known at work was dead.
The crazy changes in people that happened due to this virus grabbed her attention. She even thought about the country guy from the gas station. How he lost his mind. She wondered what happened to all that gas. Fear struck her as she opened her eyes and looked at the gas gage.
A smile of relief emerged on her face after seeing that there was half a tank left, she closed her eyes and went back to her thoughts.
It was funny how thoughts hit you. Mary thought about her relationship with Dexter. She wondered what might have happened if the dead weren’t walking. Maybe her mother would have approved if she had begun dating Dexter. Maybe something serious could have happened.
But that was not to be. Now she was on her way to Dexter’s house to hide out. She had to leave behind a friend.
Are you OK?
Carolyn asked. Her voice gently shook Mary out of her daze.
Yes. How come?
Mary answered.
Because I need some help.
Carolyn said. She stopped the car.
Mary opened her eyes. In the middle of the street sat three cars. It appeared that one car ran a stop sign and it caused a pileup on the road on which Mary and Carolyn were traveling.
What are we going to do? I don’t think we can drive through that like you did with the other accidents,
Mary said.
I think we are going to have to find the keys and drive at least one of those cars out of the way.
With the sun down? Do you have a flashlight?
Mary asked.
Well I have a keychain light.
Great, so one of us is going to have to go out and find the car keys and drive a car out of the way in the darkness with a keychain light.
Mary said.
Don’t forget, dead people are attempting to eat you while you do it,
Carolyn joked.
Is that supposed to be funny?
Yes, now slide over into the driver’s seat while I go move these cars,
Carolyn said as she exited the car. Mary fumbled a few times before succeeding in locking the doors.
I left the car running. Keep the headlights on,
Carolyn said through the open window.
OK,
Mary said right before she closed the window.
Before thinking, Mary jumped out of the car and slammed the door shut. She ran over to get to the driver’s side of the car. She looked around to verify that no zombies were approaching her. Then she attempted to open the driver’s door. The door would not open. The car continued running as Mary started jerking wildly on the door handle.
Mary rushed to attempt to open the back seat
