Bianca's Guide to Raising Twins - Bianca Clovis
Introduction
Congratulations on being a mom of twins. It is an amazing adventure that few people get to take. It is also a tough journey filled with pot holes and detours.
I am always surprised how many people tell me they wanted twins once they find out that I am a twin mom. I always smile graciously but in my head I think if only you knew.
Twins are a blessing. Especially if you have had previous infertility. But, there are things about parenting twins that singleton parents can NEVER understand.
This book doesn't delve too deeply into the technical stuff about pregnancy. You will probably have read that in other books. It also doesn't delve much into the medical aspects of twins.
This book is from one twin mom to another. This is the book I wish someone had given me the day I announced : WE ARE HAVING TWINS.
Kinds of Twins
I promised to not get very in detail about the medical parts of pregnancy with twins but I did want to mention a few details about the kinds of twins because many of the pregnancy books boggled my mind with all their technical jargon when I was studying about being a mom of twins.
Fraternal twins-
These twins come from two different eggs and two different sperm. Fraternal twins are no more alike than other siblings. In fact, if a woman has intercourse with two different men during a short period of time there is a possibility she could give birth to fraternal twins who have different fathers and are actually only half siblings.
I have fraternal twins.
Fraternal twins are the safer
type of twin to have. Since the twins don't share identical DNA there is a possibility that if one has a genetic issue the other won't. Because identical twins share DNA it is almost guaranteed that is one has a genetic disorder the other will too. They have the same genes.
Fraternal twins also don't seem to be quite as close to each other as identical twins. Don't get me wrong. My daughters love each other. They don't like to be separated. But, they don't have the deep almost mind reading bond you often hear of identical twins having. For me, this is a very good thing. My twins are my only children and I often have felt like a third wheel. I feel like they are the center of each other's universe and I am just there to supervise and contribute care. I imagine the emotion would be even worse had they been identical.
Identical twins-
These twins are made from one egg and one sperm. They are almost always the same sex (I had previously believed they were ALWAYS the same sex until I was watching a National Geographic's program that showed a very rare
