About this ebook

"She let herself kiss him, her lips sliding over his as the hunger in her fed itself. It was Kailen that turned the kiss into a hard and needful thing, passion igniting between them, fed by the fires in her soul..."

What would you do if you knew that the fate of your people rested squarely with you? Would you be able to step up and do what needed to be done?

For Blaise Morrison this scenario is fact. The fate of the Kingdom of Aberlone hangs on her shoulders alone. She is the last living Fire Faery and must free the Sun Magic from its receptacle in the Crystal Ice Castle of Unadecia to save the Kingdom from the dark shadow.

While learning how to harness the fire magic that makes her so unique she also has to deal with her growing feelings for Kailen Drake, the fae warrior who brought her back to the fae realm and is teaching her how to be fae. She also has to deal with her relationship with a father she barely knows and has always hated.

Is it too much for one faery to deal with? Will she be able to save the Kingdom and all of its inhabitants?

Blazing Fire Trilogy - Zenith - Kathrine Emrick

    Prologue

Hiding amongst the trees, the Shadow watched as Blaise Morrison missed the target once again. Her hair was a fiery red color and her body was something to ignite any man’s dreams. Shadow tried hard not to care about that and forced himself to concentrate on the reason behind his lurking. The last known Fire Faery was in the midst of a rigorous training session with Kailen Drake, the warrior that had been glued to her side in more ways than one for the last few weeks. He’d had to be very careful not to be seen by the warriors King Geraint had watching the girl.

Fools, all of them. Magic could cover him easily enough. He hadn’t even needed to bother. Yet.

He could see she was struggling with the training. Her magic was more powerful than even he had suspected, even if it was raw and untrained. The fact that she could do the things he was witnessing even though she didn’t know how to completely control herself yet told him that she was a powerful force to be reckoned with.

He smiled. The fact that she was so powerful was exactly what would make his plan to take over the kingdom so much easier. Even his own magic might not be a match for hers. It would take more than straight force to make her his. He would have to use cunning and trickery. Two things he excelled at.

His little minion, that idiot Tino, was supposed to have checked in with him today. And yesterday, for that matter. He hadn’t seen his second in command for several days. He had put fear into Tino’s soul the last time he’d seen him because the man had failed to do his job properly. This Fire Faery was supposed to have been captured by Tino in the Human Realm before she had ever stepped foot in this one. Shadow should be training her himself. Instead, he would have to correct all the idiotic ideas Kailen was putting in her head.

The girl was within his reach now, his plan back on track. His minion’s whereabouts was a minor concern. He was sure that Tino would surface sooner or later.

He watched from his concealment as Kailen explained some minor point to the girl. Anyone born to the life of the Fae would know it already. Her being raised in the Human Realm hadn’t done Blaise any favors. She aimed the bracelet at the target once Kailen was done and Shadow saw her eyes screwed up in concentration as she let the burst of fire shoot out from it.

    Amazing.

He needed to work out the finer details of his plan. He would let them all think that she was safe while she was training. He wanted her to be proficient in her craft before he took her. It would save him time if all he had to do was make her see how best to use her powers.

He couldn’t take her before she had completed her purpose, though. He had to wonder if they had even told her why they had brought her back to the Fae Realm now. It had nothing to do with reconciling her with her estranged father, that oaf Drew Morrison. She needed to make her journey to the Crystal Ice Castle in Unadecia and free the magic there from its prison inside the castle. Once she was successful, and only then, he would strike and take her from them all. She would be his, body and soul.

He liked the way that sounded. Felana may have a problem with part of that but she would have to learn to accept her place. She had become all too possessive of him of late. She, just like everyone else, was expendable. Shadow was the only one who mattered.

And once he was in possession of the magic there would be no stopping him. He would be the most powerful ruler that Aberlone had ever known.

    Chapter One

As the burst of fire from her powerful red diamond bracelet missed its mark for what seemed like the one hundredth time Blaise Morrison screamed with frustration. She just couldn’t get the hang of keeping it on course. Kailen had shown her how to bring forth the magic, to make it pour out of her in a red hot sheet of flame, or a spike of fire, or any of a hundred other forms. It was control that eluded her. She always seemed to veer to the right a little at the very last second.

So how many more times do I have to do this? She wiped a weary hand through her short, fiery-red hair and sighed.

Twirling the bracelet with its five irregularly shaped gemstones around her wrist absently she frowned at Kailen Drake. His tall, strong body was a study in patience today just like it had been yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that, and every day that he had been out here with her. He pulled strands of his long blonde hair out of his steely gray eyes now and smiled encouragingly at her.

The bracelet on her wrist was burning against her skin once again. The training sessions weren’t helping her get any better at harnessing the power of the bracelet, the power of her own inner being. She’d had enough of this for today. She was eager to finish up. It was time they had some fun.

Kailen stood very close to her and it made her heart quicken when his hand rested gently on a shoulder left bare by her tank top. As many times as it takes for you to get it right, that’s how many.

Damn it, why couldn’t he just take her somewhere they could be alone? These guards around them all the time made it hard for her to do the things she wanted to do with him. She swallowed and tried to focus on their studies. The sooner she did this right, the sooner they could go back to the castle. They had been training for hours today and she was hot, sweaty, and tired. And they hadn’t even begun to train with Ashkore, her giant red dragon.

Fine, Faery Boy, she said to him teasingly. But you’re buying me dinner.

Don’t I always, my fiery-haired maiden? Kailen winked at her and stood back, motioning for her to try it again.

Blaise squared her feet to the target, a scarecrow stuffed with hay and put into a pair of brown pants and an old green shirt to give it the basic form of a person. Blaise had a problem with that in a general sense. She couldn’t stand the thought of aiming her powers at a person, let alone using them against someone. Maybe even killing them.

Kailen had explained to her that not everything in the faery world was happiness and joy. Some things were just plain evil. In fact, he said, a darkness was growing that they couldn’t stop on their own. Not without her help. But how was she supposed to help them if she couldn’t even stand spearing flame through a practice dummy...?

She blinked and lowered her hand, the bracelet hot against her skin in a way that radiated power but not pain. Was this her whole problem? Was she having trouble connecting with the target because she was afraid to hurt someone? Back in the Human Realm, she had been a teacher. She had seen any number of times when her students had psyched themselves out before a test and actually made themselves fail by being worried they would fail.

Was she doing the same thing to herself?

    Blaise? Kailen prompted her.

Yeah, she answered absently. "I mean, yes. Hold on a minute.

Do you need to take a break?

Maybe. Could she do this? Could she hurt someone with her power? This was only a straw dummy after all. If she couldn’t take this on, what good would she be to Kailen or her father or any of them in a real fight?

She could picture it now, her in a battle just like in Lord of the Rings
