    THE BLUESMAN #5:

    SACRIFICE

    BY STUART JAFFE

This was when it all changed.

From the moment I met the Bluesman Fuller, I should have known things would turn out bad. How could it have been any other way? He came from a parallel world filled with violence and destruction. An apocalyptic horror that scarred him from the day he lifted his first sword. He wielded magic from his guitar with the same great skill he played the instrument, and he slayed the monsters that had slipped into our universe from his with equal skill and grace.

Though I had seen his kinder side, I should have known. I had fought along with him in order to preserve this planet from all these horrible creatures, to keep it beautiful, to hold on to a place where he hoped to find peace — even if only for his final days. I knew he could be gentle and caring.

But life around him resembled the world he came from — violent and destructive. And when we added Dee to our team, a spunky, sexy, hardened gal who stole Fuller's heart from the first blast of her shotgun, I should have known.

The trouble began late one night while I tried to get a bit of sleep in a dive motel somewhere near Ashboro, North Carolina. My lumpy mattress found every bruise on my body — gifts from a couple of pig-snouted, multi-tusked monsters we had disposed of only two nights before. But even if my body had been in perfect condition, I would have still struggled to sleep thanks to the bar attached to the motel. They served the beer-guzzling crowd with a twangy live band and an endless supply of rowdiness. Yet even if the bar had been closed for sanitation violations (something that probably should have happened), I would have still fought for sleep thanks to my partner Fuller and our teammate Dee pounding the walls with their exertions.

Every time I had to hear them moaning and grunting, I wondered if Fuller would survive. I had no idea of his exact age, but the old man's tight-curled hair had been white from the day I met him. His black skin hung loose over his strong frame, and the weariness in his eyes always left me thinking he'd rather sit at the park feeding the ducks than spend another day hunting monsters.

Dee, on the other hand, epitomized youthful abundance. She was in her early-twenties and had all the unleashed desires that go with that age. To me, that explained why she hooked up with us — why else would a person throw away everything to travel around getting in deadly combat? Youthful ignorance can be bliss. It certainly explained why I did it all. But no amount of hormones or naivety or blind ambition could explain to me what she saw in sleeping with a man three times her age. This went beyond May/December. This was May/December-of-next-year.

I have to admit that there was another reason I couldn't sleep. I still reeled over my lunch with Dee. See, Fuller hadn't found a decent paying gig in a few weeks and our slim funds had become
