About this ebook

KEEP CALM AND STEAMPUNK ON

The whole of Victorian London knows there is something not quite right about the Lady Verity Hart. She may be the daughter of an MP and the sister of famed inventor Lord David Hart, but she is a spinster whose own father threatens to send her to the madhouse every fortnight. Because Society is correct-Verity Hart is no lady. If they suspected how quick with a quip she is, let alone the majority of her brother's ingenious machines were her design, the sale of fainting couches would double.

Verity requires one herself when her beloved brother is kidnapped by vampyres in the dead of night. With the aid of an aggravating, rude American bounty hunter with a secret of his own, Verity takes to land, sea, and even air to rescue the only person who could ever love and truly accept her. Or is he?

To the Manor Born, then Dead, then Undead

Jamie does not return after that. At least to the room. About ten minutes after he storms out, I hear the chair outside the door creak. Even now his honor will not allow him to abandon me to the wolves. Of course I want to throw open that door and kiss and stroke his worry away, but I know what he is going through. Realizing you are in love is terrifying at first, especially in our unique circumstances, so he needs to go through the motions and acclimate to his new state of being as I did. I do not envy him. I fall asleep listening to his steady breathing out in the hall. My centurion.

A shutting door brings me out of a dream where I run with wolves across the moors, keeping pace even, though I have two legs to their four. Jamie?

No, ma'am, Bridget, the maid, says. She stands at the door with a tray of food. Mrs. Roarke told me to bring you breakfast.

What time is it? I ask, sitting up.

A little past eight, ma'am. She places the tray on my lap. Eggs, bacon, ham, and toast. Delicious. I'll just fetch your clothes, ma'am.

Thank you, Bridget, I say as she walks to the door. And see if you can find my husband fresh clothes a well. He's being stubborn out there.

Confusion fills her face. Mr. McQueen has left, ma'am.

    I beg pardon?

He went into town at dawn.

What? I shout. I move the tray and fly out of bed. He wouldn't... When I toss open the door, I find Duncan whittling in the guard post chair. He did. Where is Jamie?

I don't...I cannot tell ya, ma'am. He said not to. He just said he'd give me two pounds if I watched out for you today. Made sure you did not leave the island.

Indignant rage flares within me. That bastard. He has lost his bloody mind. Do you know the location of the vampyre Michael's manor?

    I don't, I can't—

Ten pounds. I shall give you ten pounds if you take me there.

He exchanges a look with Bridget, who is as horrified at this turn of events as he is. It's dangerous, ma'am, far too dangerous for...you. He smartly does not add for a woman but may as well have.

That is my concern, not yours. All you need concern yourself with is which fine necklace you shall purchase Heather with your ten pounds to aid in your wooing. Do we have a bargain?

Duncan mulls it over for half a second. Me or Heather, no question there. I can show you where the manor is, but cannot go in with you. Grand-Da has forbidden it.

"I never expected you to. But I need you both to fetch me a few items. A maid's uniform, a cross or crucifix, and any silver blades the pack possesses. Now. I go back into the room, kick myself, then poke my head out again. Please." Even at times like these, manners should never be forgotten.

Half an hour later, I am ready for battle. In keeping with our original plan, I am dressed in one of Bridget's black and white livered dresses to blend in with the staff at the manor. Stuffed in my cleavage is a cross, in each of my stockings a small silver blade, along with the Artemis. Not ideal but better than nothing. Duncan leads me through the near empty castle, and those who do pass do not acknowledge us. The disguise works thus far. May my luck continue. Oh please
